What is the difference? I can't really find a straight answer?

I imagine the boards and chipsets are just smaller versions of the originals with better cooling?

Or is the console actually less capable?

I obviously would like the blu ray function of the PS3 so want the same offerings the older brothers of the SS (haha, good one Sony) has.

Thanks!

Pretty much and yes to both of those (less capable however is subjective based on whether you used the extra capability it used to have).

Basically it is a more efficient, smaller PS3 which has had most of the un-used (by the majority) functionaility removed to reduce costs - and thus the price you pay.

a lot of the bigger features lost - PS2 (disc based) backwards compatibility, Linux support, card reader, were stripped before the original Slim was launched.

If you are not too fussed by any of those features then the Super Slim will do the job just fine.

SS imho looks and feels cheap and plasticky.
That sliding top thing looks horrendous too :p

Keeping my eyes peeled for a 2nd hand PS3 Slim from Game after PS4 launch, they'll be inundated with stock and offer 12 month waranties :)

EDIT: SS is apparantly fairly noisy compared to the slim also

I've owned all 3 iterations of the PS3, and the super slim was my favourite.

It's not actually cheap feeling at all, and the sliding top is actually very well built and solid. It's true that disc noise is slightly increased, but the overall system fan noise is lower than the previous slim.

I want the following in the order of priority (not fussed about second hand)

Price low
Noise level low
Blu Ray quality playback
Size (not fussed, but the original is HUGE)

That's it, obviously to play PS3 games, but those will be rare and only a few. It won't be my main source for gaming, my self and the other half want to play through The Last of Us and I figured I could sell my Blu Ray player for a few pennies and replace it with a PS3.

Smaller yes, but actually the cooling is worse seeing as the system is generating less heat now. That said, the newer models are quieter.

A second-hand Slim (ideally one with illuminated Eject and Power buttons) will be quieter and cheaper than a new Super Slim. Without any disc in the drive I imagine they're about the same, but the Super Slim is much louder when accessing discs due to the top-mounted drive.
