I have spent god knows how many hours reading bits and bobs about surround sound and im still clueless

Iv been browsing
http://www.sony.co.uk/product/hcs-cinema-surround-kit/ht-sf1300

http://www.sony.co.uk/product/hcs-surround-kit---dvd-player/dav-dz860w

Heres 2 for example, I fancy the top one after reading a few reviews

Get a seperate Amp for £225ish quid (Yam or Sony)

And some Jamo 5.1s, these will be far better than an all in one unit and ideal for gaming an films.

I have the DSP AX761 running Jamo A102 HC5 speakers and the sound is like night and day compared to mates who have all in one systems.

I see, but why is it better to have a separate amp? again I dont have a clue
Also, where is a good website to get audio equipment ?

Better circuitry and sound processing provides a better sound, more features and connections. Most will do HDMI sound too.

Your links don't work by the way

First thing I would do is remove those links, they are competitors. Swap the links for these:

You will find most people around here will tell you to get seperates rather than an all-in-one. As said, all-in-ones are a low price for what you get, so they have to compromise on something, whether that be build quality, sound quality, or features.
I would go along with saying seperates are better, and you would definately tell the difference, but it depends where you are starting from. If you are used to only the TV sound, or cheap PC speakers, then all-in-one will still be a vast improvement. If you are used to a failry good hi-fi, then the improvement will be less noticable.

you may be better looking around AVforum.

Yeh Iv been used to tv speakers all my days.
When you mention buying separatly, what exactly do i need

Speakers
Amp
Reciever

or is an amp and reciever same thing??
then theres all the cable would i need to buy them separatly as well or wil they come with what I buy

I hate this not having a clue

If I were you I'd get either the Onkyo 506 or Sony DG820 receiver. each can be got for around £210-£220
Then Either get the Jamo surround speakers for around £190. Or just some very good stereo speakers, then add the rears center and sub later. You'd lose the surround but get a much better sound.

You can get the Sony STR-DG820 7.1 Channel Receiver (Black) with 4 x HDMI inputs - for £219.99 delivered.

Bit of a bargain really

7.1 Channel Audio/Video Receiver
100 Watts X 7 Amplifier Power (8 ohms, 1Khz, 1.0% THD)
Accepts 1080/60p and 24p video signal via HDMI
HDMI Active Intelligence: 4 in/1 out(Video and Audio)
Optimized for Blu-ray Disc and other HD Sources

i really recommend the Jamos, sound much louder than you would expect for the size and the included sub is very good. For FPS games, combined with a decent AMP, they give you a really clear direct of sound.

You can pick the Jamo's up for £195 delivered.

hmmm can someone Pm me the best place to buy the Jamo Speakers
I suppose an extra 100 odd quid aint much when it comes to a much better system overall

You budget was £400?

This is only £15 over. The speakers should be easy to find, this forum doesnt have a PM function - just think of rainforests

Yep, I have them.

Very good speakers, the finish is like the back of a iPhone 3G but better and they feel really good, the silver surround matches my A656 samsung surround perfectly.

good good
Right then so its down to

Sony STR-DG820 Reciever and Jamo A102HCS5 Speakers

Cable question now, I have my Ps3, freeview box and Tv. Ps3 is already connected via HDMI, will I just need one more HDMI cable to connect reciever to Tv?

I don't mean to hijack but I currently have some cheapo £50 creative PC speakers, consider that when I imagine the sorts of speakers mentioned here are tonnes better, but at the moment I can only get 5.1 from files or games on my PC and would like to get it from my PS3 and 360. Though this is only in a small room on a 24" monitor so I think this might be overkill, would you recommend anything else or do you think I'd still appreciate it, I've never had a problem with the screen size and will end up getting a proper TV.

I was looking at the Z-5500s but they don't get too much praise around here, and from what I gather I could get significantly better quality. I don't have any problem spending £400 if it's worth it.

Never underestimate the effect of sound. Visuals are only half the experience. And yes a £400 budget should certainly get a very good 5.1 system.
