MCV's prediction that Sony may be soon unveiling support for terrestrial digital broadcast service Freeview for the PLAYSTATION 3 is looking spot on following comments from Sony Computer Entertainment New Zealand boss Warwick Light. He told Kiwi outlet The Press that the company is "hoping next year... to release a digital tuner for the PS3, turning it into a programmable TV recorder." His timeframe? First quarter of 2008, alongside the New Zealand launch of Freeview.

Freeview is already available to fans of receiving television signals in the UK, broadcasting dozens of television and radio channels. It's possible that the PS3 TV tuner could simply be added via one of the console's four USB ports and that larger hard drive options may coincide with the product announcement.

But I'm just riffing here. I'm sure we'll know by Games Convention in August if this whole thing pans out.

Maybe this is one of the big announcements they spoke about the other day to happen at Leipzig, not much use to me, but I can see how some people would use it. Its only going to be worth it if its at sensible price, I wonder if the PS3 upscaler could be used to upscale TV progs, that would be a nice feature.

This sounds promising, I wonder if it's native HD, would have thought so, BBC HD without sky, yes please.

Sounds like the wireless TV thing they did for the PSP that was too expensive.
Sounds a bit backwards to stick with OTA PVR, rather than the internet TV that everyone else is going with.

PS3 needs to push it more as a total media centre opposed to naff surreal adverts.

I've not seen a Sony advert on TV since the Champions League final.

Me neither but I have seen some on the net. I hope PS3 get there act together as Im looking at building a media centre pc soon and id rather buy a cheap shiny ps3 which can play all media formats and has a pvr too.

last one i saw was those damn awful 'third place' ones for the ps2, might just rank as one of the worst adverts ever.

This is pretty cool news though.

They sucked ASS!
I was always a fan of the Sony Playstation adverts though, cause it had the best slogan ever:

Do not underestimate the power of Playstation.

It must have intimidated the hell out of Sega.

Then again i haven't seen many console adverts apart from the annoying brain training ones and the odd Wii one. Id think late august Microsoft will start pushing Halo 3 (like it needs it!), and Sony possibly the same time when games such Heavenly sword, Uncharted are on the horizon.

I've seen DiRT and Forza 2 on TV lately, but that's it. We know Microsoft will bring out the big guns end of the year, they broke the record last year and this years run in is miles stronger.

Sony are really gonna have to bring it at Christmas. Expect every other advert to be for one of the 5 consoles :p

Meh sounds pointless to me and will probably be overpriced aswell.

I just want my PS3 as a PS3, not anything else, same with my 360, it's a console to me and that's all it'll ever be.

Sounds like a nice addition...

Will only work if you can play a game and tape a show at the same time though!

tbh to compete with sky+ and all those cheap Freeview PVRs it would have to be able to do at least 2 shows at a time, which seems to be the norm these days.

It sounds like a great way of increasing the media functions of the PS3, but the proof will be in the implementation. (ie easy to use etc).
