PS3 to PC Monitor

Hi guys

I had a '360 for which I shared my PC monitor, via a "splitter box" into which I fed the VGA cable from the monitor and then to the PC and the '360, allowing me to switch between the two.

Would this system work ok for the PS3 also?

The Monitor is an Acer one, with a single VGA input.

Thanks in advance.

Nope. It's one of the unfortunate flaws of the PS3.
To connect via VGA your monitor needs to support HDCP for which you could then get a HDMI > DVI-D (not sure if you could even do it to VGA).
You could also use Component if your monitor had that.

But for straight to VGA, only Microsoft offer that.

Nokkon, for all our good banter on the football site, can you please speak English to a genuine IT layman!

My monitor is the somewhat "budget" ACER AL1916W, if that helps

lol.
For a HDCP monitor you're looking at a pretty top end monitor such as a Dell 2407 or the newest Samsung screens. It's quite a new feature and is something predominantly seen in LCD or Plasma TV sets rather than monitors.
It's to do with Blu-Ray discs and copywrites or something like that over a HDMI cable.

I'm not entirely sure what it's for or why it's implemented, but I know that you need a monitor that either has Component (for a straight MultiAV > Component connection from the PS3) or HDCP (for a HDMI to DVI-D connection).

Unfortunately you can do neither with that monitor. Sorry.

Even using a

"1080p COMPONENT - VGA BOX CONVERTER"

as advertised on our favourite auction site?

It will look crapola. I have not used that exact poduct though, but a lot of those things are not that great.

It depends how much it costs, but the results will depend on your monitor. I don't think you will get 1080p out of it still.

If you can post some details for the item you are thinkning of trying, I will have a think in the morning.

(ignore my block caps in the previous answer, my humour is failing today, on multiple counts ;) ).

Well you could get a SCART to VGA adaptor (approx £15) and by using a female to female converter plug in just the yellow (video) composite lead into the F2F converter. Plug the red/White audio out into amp or a PC speaker system and it should work but only at SD res though.

That's rather a load of dog dirt isn't it - bloody Sony!

This item, for instance, claims it would work - it's one of many

Oh it will work, but it will look crap I suspect. The PS3 thinks you have a cojmponet lead plugged in, so it will only give you component resolutions, ie 480p, 576p/i, 720p, 1080i. The little box will do its best to convert the signal (not hard as both vga and component are technically analogue HD), and then you monitor will get confused a bit as it is expecting a pc reolution to come into it, instead it is getting something that it doesnt understand, so will scale it accordingly (ie poorly).

That is my basic understanding, although I have not used the exact device you mention (or your model monitor).

Yes, it will work, but the actual picture clarity will be lost to the point you may as well plug a SCART into a TV and play it like that.
It's another major oversight by Sony and something that Microsoft spotted a gap in the market for brilliantly (although they underestimated the actual demand come launch day which was very annoying).

Will it massively diminish it, or only very slightly

Looks like i'm going to be saving my pennies to spend on others this christmas!

It might work. Component and VGA are pretty similar - most Sharp LCD TVs used to ship with a VGA input and a small cable adaptor that converted it into component video.

I'd be wary of eBay products from the far east - not much comeback if it's bobbins...

The other thing I would ask is, that if one of these converters worked ok, looking at the component cables you need to connect - how do I connect the PS3 to a speaker? My Monitor doesn't have any speakers.

Thanks

Those sharp TVs just had the circuitry to accept component through the VGA port, it had nothing to do with VGA being similar to component.

I'm not sure how many times I've posted this on the OCUK forums so far in the past 6 months, but never mind, I've had my PS3 connected to my projector via VGA, no probs, using a VGA adaptor.

EDIT: if you scroll down you can see the picture of it, with the PS2/3 multiAV output one end, and VGA and phono audio connectors the other.

Interesting. And you watch yours for Blu-Ray etc on it (I assume you are)?

Just out of curiosity what is your projector's resolution and what settings do you set in XMB? At the very least this will stop me handing out more misinformation!!!

Hello mate!

I don't have the adapter here at the moment, as a mate of mine was having problems with his component connection, so he's borrowed that to use VGA for now.

I did however play bluray movies via VGA on my projector.
I don't think any HD movies are HDCP locked, yet.

I remember reading ages ago, before I got a PS3, that the studios said they weren't going to impliment content protection on HD movies until around 2011, to allow people with older HDTVs (such as my mates) to play HD movies.

Don't forget, the VGA adaptor connects to the MultiAV out, not the HDMI out. So, no different than the fact you can view bluray movies via component.

As for the resolutions it supports, I'm afraid I actually can't remember.
My projector only pops up with "HDTV" when the PS3 is connected to it.
I didn't change any settings in my PS3 to do with resolution though, when connected via VGA... I just changed the output from HDMI in the menu.
The max res was still set to 1080p.

Hang on, no, the first time I did it, I set the display to 720p to make sure it worked, then up to 1080p, and it still worked..... irrelevant anyway, as my projector can't display 1080p, though it can receive and downscale it.

When I get it back, I'll disconnect the HDMI from my TV, and connect up via VGA if you like, and I can post back the results of what res is supported via VGA. I'm kind of interested myself now, despite using HDMI.

Where did you obtain a cable like this - couldn't spot any on the old Fleabay!

Is the PS3 out connector the same as a PS2 one?
