PS3 to PC Monitor

Where did you obtain a cable like this - couldn't spot any on the old Fleabay!

Is the PS3 out connector the same as a PS2 one?

I got it off my Brother, who used it on his PS2 for Linux.

Yep, the connector is the same for PS1/2/3.

V1N.

Don't suppose anyone would have a Danny La Rue where I can obtain one from do they!?

Would surely be a much cheaper, and seemingly proven option, when compared to the component box thing.

Im going to get HDFury to do my PS3 into my monitor VGA.

Seems to work pretty well from what ive read and been told by users of it.

Thats interesting because that cable never worked with games on the PS2, excellent if it works though.

Unfourternatly, sandy10, the linux kits are no longer produced so I think you'd be very lucky to find one of these cables for sale anywhere at a reasonable price (they were never sold individually only as part of the package). Although it still wouldn't get round the problem of poor picture on a normal TFT as it would still be output at HD resolutions.

So, is a component box, or something like "HDFURY" really my only solution?!

And if so, is there a cable from the PS with the HDMI input for the HDFury, with the phono leads also on it to connect to another speaker?

Ok from my research, It seems there are 2 options, HDFury and the component box.

The component converter clearly plugs into the HDMI port on the PS3, and would allow me to plug my speakers into the box.

With the HDFury, I don't understand how the speakers would be plugged in - the VGA port slots into the monitor and the HDMI cable from the PS3 plugs directly into the HDfury it seems - how would I get a sound input for my speakers? From what I can see, the PS3 only has one AV output - does the standard HDMI cable have the red and white audio cables connected to it?

I'm a confused boy and perhaps, some might say, a pain in the arse.

Can anyone please comment on the above, I wanted to order this this weekend!

Thanks

I had brief look around, surprisngly positiveish comments for the HD fury. there is no way you will get audio though. As far as your ps3 is concerned it has a HDMI cable on the end of it so is "pushing" the audio down it!! (HDMI transmits audio and video down same cable).

The only workaround I can think is speakers that use TOS link which the PS3 supports, but I don't know whether this can output aduio whilst the HDMI is in use (someone more techie with the audio side of ps3 better answer that one, to be sure).

I only looked around briefly but sounds like this product is around the £70 mark which is a lot for a cable!

Sounds a much better choice than a component/vga box, but I guess the audio would not be an issue if you used the component box.

Can't really advise anything else, also I don't know of anyone on these forums who has one of the above.

Thank You - the HDFury has good reviews, but I couldn't, as you say, see any way that audio would work - the only available port, I think, would be the optical one?!

I emailed the guys selling them about audio, and they said:

"With the PS3, you can have the HDMI cable with HDFury plugged in for video,
and you can use the red/white phonos on the original composite AV cable that
comes with the PS3 for sound - you just set it up in the options in the PS3
menus".

Don't quite get that!

I will go for the component box I think, as it allows for speakers etc - although the Fury I think offers better performance.

He is right mate, it will ask you if you would like to output sound and video through HDMI and you can plug your other lead in the back of the ps3 that comes with and use that for sound. Hope this helps.

Which lead is it John and into which port would it fit?

I can't see others on the 40GB PS3 where it can fit ok?

Sure can be done.

Forgive the quick reply, I'm typing this on the PS3 browser.

I have my PS3 connected to my TV via HDMI, but sound is provided via the TOSlink to my 5.1/DTS system.

When it's setup like this, I only get audio through the optical cable, nothing through the TV at all. To get sound through HDMI, I need to go to the PS3 audio setup page, and select HDMI instead of optical out... but yes, you can definately have video only down the HDMI, and audio through Toslink.

Same here for me too. I do the exact same thing, but you can also use the AV cable to output sound if you dont have a Amp with a Digital Optical input, and just the use the Red/White composite cables.

The PS3 comes with two video outputs. One digital (HDMI) and one analogue (MultiAV)

I think what he means is you could have the video output via HDMI, and have the standard composite cable, that comes with the PS3, connected at the same time to the MultiAV out, for the stereo phono outputs they have.

The third, and better option for audio, would be if you have some kind of surround system, or even a PC 2.1 system, with an optical audio in,which you could connect from the PS3s optical out.
