Hi all, i've put the Surround in "", because i'm always getting corrected that its not "true" surround, meh.

Anyway, i've plugged it in the Digital out on the PS3, and then turned it on the surround unit to recieve, but it doesn't recieve.

Obviously i don't want to use the AUX Video lead instead of HDMI because of loosing the quality, but would i still be able to plug the AUX leds in at the back of the PS3, and take the sound off it (plug Phono leads into AUX input on surround)?

Just wondering if the PS3 will still work with 2 outputs plugged in at the same time, obviously video would be through HDMI and not Phono...

Phil.

It can handle that but obviously the PS3 would only be outputting a stereo signal if you used phono. You simply set it in the audio output menu.

Why exactly is it not 'proper' surround?

I'm always being corrected that it won't be "true" surround sound, only stereo, I.E it will be ordinary sound put through the surround sound speakers.

Ah ok, well yeah, as i say it'll work but it'll be stereo. Your amp probably has a way to emulate surround sound from a stereo source but i personally hate those effect and just stick to stereo.

I assume you set the PS3 to optical output for sound when you tried originally?

No i didn't come to think of it, but to be honest i'd prefer to use the Phono leads, otherwise it means disconnecting the Digital from the TV and putting it into the PS3 everytime i want to play it!

Ah ok, fair enough, i would recommend connecting the TV via phono and the PS3 via optical however as i doubt the TV will be outputting surround sound (not sure if Sky HD outputs surround sound but i'm pretty sure nothing else does) but the PS3 will; using optical will allow you to take advantage of this.

If you mean something to plug both devices into your reciever then you want an 'optical switcher'. This will let you switch between the two sources when you need to with the flick of a switch, i'll update my post with a picture and rough price in a second.

Bah! Imageshack is borked, basically just google:

'3-way optical TOS-link selector'

That should get you a decent set of links, you're looking at paying £7-10, you'll still need to 'switch' between optical sources as it won't transmit both at once for obvious reasons, still better than climbing behind the tele tho.

Because surround (as its name implies) is based on multi channel audio, usually the 5.1 flavour. 5 speakers and a sub for bass. Phono is a stereo setup with each RCA for each of the channels of a stereo setup, that is either LEFT or RIGHT, and that is all. Are MP3 players surround sound?

Phil, your DVD thing doesnt have any sort of decoder to deal with any sort of multichannel input (only phono input on yours anyway). It only does dolby digital (surround sound) on the DVDs and is able to send the digital audio OUT to ANOTHER sound system/reciever to use the signal for its own speaker setup etc.

Basically your rear right and front right speaker will always make the same noise when used with the PS3.
