PS3 to use HDMI 1.3

Hey guys,
I just found this article stating that the PS3 will use HDMI 1.3. My question is, WHY? Are they really that intent on making this the most over-the-top piece of kit ever to be released?

I used to be a great fan of the Playstation consoles but it seems to me that they are sealing themselves a pitiful fate if they think that this overpriced hardware is going to convince peple to buy their system, particularly when it is unlikely they will deliver anything 'better' than the 360.

Sure, it's nice to be future-proof, but filling their system with this to-the-minute technology really seems a step too far, especially when what, 5% of their target audience has access to a HD TV, let alone a HDMI 1.3 HD TV.

So much for making a gaming system accessible to everyone...

Anyway, rant over and sorry if this is old news, but I couldn't find anything else posted about it. It would be nice to see other people's opinions on this as the PS3 launch grows ever-near.

You won't NEED an HDTV HDMI 1.3 compliant TV, so it will be accessible to everyone...

It's not accessible to everyone for the simple fact it is using so much technolgy that isn't available elsewhere yet, hence the massive price tag...

Thing is though, surely including this kind of technology is what helped push the price up to the ridiculous level it's at now.

HDMI 1.3 is not necessary and probably won't even be utilised that much when the next gen comes along in 5 years or so. (Sorry, I'm fed up with people saying next gen when talking about the PS3. Current generation is the 360/PS3...it's around now (or close in the PS3's case) and is therefore current))

So your beef isn't that it has HDMI 1.3 so much, but the price tag. Well we have had a number of '**** off the PS3's price' threads so you could have posted your rant in one of those ;)

What's with the hostility? As I stated I hadn't seen anyone say anything about it having HDMI 1.3 yet and explained that I thought it really is not necessary.

Due to the fact the price is subject to change this recent announcement could bump it up further...

I wasn't meaning to be hostile ;) :) I just find the PS3-bashing threads a bit tiresome.

Understandable mate, it wasn't really intended as that but I guess it has ended up that way. Was intended as a place for peolpe to state their opinion on the tech being used for it, not necessarily for everyone to randomly slate it.

I'm all for getting new tech, and the fact that PS3 is going to be loaded with it is probably the most exciting part about it, as none of the games bar MGS4 have grabbed my attention at all.

Thing is with all new technology, once it becomes the norm, the technology is going to become dated, and thus will in a couple of years be crap in comparison.

My wording of that sentence above is a bit pants, but lets look at DVD in comparison. If you bought a DVD player back when they just came out, you'll not have got a massive amount of features or capabilites available, and if you compare one of the original players to say even a £80 ASDA DVD player, the ASDA player will probably have more features and will read disks a whole lot quicker. Plus DTS-EX, DD-ES etc, but, I may be talking a bit of rubbish along with that.

At the end of the day, you're not buying a games console any more, you're buying a technology centre with larger capabilities. If you really don't want to fork out that much on a PS3, then go for a Wii or a 360, or, wait, save your cash, buy second hand or whatever.

That's the price for buying new technology I guess.

So what can this PS3 do apart from being able to play blu-ray movies and games...

If i understand right,,You can't even use it for something simple like recording TV onto it harddrive..

what can the PS3 do that the xbox360 can't do??

Dunno, I'm not bothered too much about movies, it's more the ability to be able to record 25gb (a layer) to blu-ray and then watch it on a ps3 etc. The 360 supports hd-dvd, but you have to buy an external drive. Roll on holodisc tbh.

I was generalising for both the 360 and PS3.

PS3? Well it's likely going to have its own media centre capabilities, so there's one, movies, photos, music etc, but also downloading content, videos, demos + other programs to the system, like the 360 does.

Then you've got internet browsing, which the 360 can't even do, but my guess is that it will in the near future.

It's not a massive amount, but you're getting HDMI output, 1080p, again a new technology which costs sill amount of money to run, but we'll see it taking off in the coming years. HDMI hasn't been confirmed 100% yet for the 360, but if it ever does come out, it'll likely be linked in some way to the launch of the HD-DVD drive.

It's a new technology, like DVD, there'll be a tiny amount of films out there that'll be available in the first 6-18 months.

Flim studios have got to go out, and convert their movies into a higher definition if possible, meaning a lot more remastering on their part, and it will take time. Cost wise, I've not looked into it, but my guess it'll follow suit with DVD again, quite expensive to start, but once(if) it gets going, the prices should drop dramatically. Same with HD-DVD, but we don't know which is going to win outright yet.

Exactly. It's possible to use any HDMI connection for HD signals, you just get the best possible signal through 1.3. Regardless of whether they opted to leave 1.3 out the picture would be the same on any lower HDMI connections.

It's a good thing, there is not a negative side to it.

It's far from, "If you don't have HDMI 1.3 you can't use HDMI".

Yup, it's almost like saying, if you don't have a HDTV, don't buy the PS3, as you're going to likely have the option of:
RGB SCART
Composite Phono/SCART
Component HD
VGA/DVI (Maybe?)
