PS3 to use HDMI 1.3

The more storage space of Blu-Ray will generally enable developers to make more content etc for the games, more levels, more speech and sound effects etc. Graphically, you will unlikely see any differences. Texture quality and model detail will generally be unaffected I reckon, as there will be a limit of sorts on how big textures can physically be used on the console (somebody posted this a while back, but that's what I understand from it).

My 2c is Sony reckon the PS3 will sell to loyal Playstation fans because it's the next playstation no matter what it does or how much it costs (not to mention the strength of the brand, little jonny will want a playstation for christmas, although if gamers get shafted this time they may not be so easily lead for PS4).

In the mean time Sony are concentrating on using the PS3 to drive Blu-Ray as the next HD DVD standard as they have an interest it it succeeding. Almost everything you hear at the moment is around HDMI 1.3, Blu-Ray etc.

For gaming PS3 is playing catch up to the 360. In terms of power theres not a lot in it and 360 has a year head start, cheaper price point and proven online service. Sony can afford to be cynical, charge a premium and use PS3 as a "cheap" Blu-Ray player using the games prices to subsidise the loss they make on the hardware in a way they couldn't do with a pure Blu-Ray player.

Of course I could be talking complete rubbish :)

It's not a massive amount, but you're getting HDMI output, 1080p, again a new technology which costs sill amount of money to run, but we'll see it taking off in the coming years.

Last time i read some info on PS3 1080p wasnt going to be used and 720p would be the standard

Well they said they're not going to have dual 1080p outputs any more, but I'm not sure o nthe whole native resolution thingy. It'll likely be in my opinion, like the 360, rendered at 720, then scaled accordingly, but we've not had any final details on any of that yet.

Might have been what the PS3 actually renders the game at, like the 360, not necessarily what it outputs it at.

Well at E3 they had a demo of a souped-up version of GT4 which was supposedly running at full 1080p resolution. Whether it was just a tech demo for E3 or if it ends up like that on actual release (if it ever is released) is debatable.

More storage space for games. Which means higher quality textures, higher-quality cutscenes etc etc
Higher quality textures is a none-issue, the console purely won't have the power to render them all.

and you know .........how exactly?

I am not saying it does but just explain your post rather than just stating that its impossible

My interpretation of the hdmi situation is that this is a closed system which will not have that much added to it for possibly 5 years, so in my believe Sony is doing the right thing by developing as much current technology into its release

As to the person who who stated that their HDTV doesnt have HDMI - well I would guess therefore that you have DVI (which have easy to get hold of HDMI converters - so no real issue there) otherwise I dont believe you actually have an HDTV ready TV - but possibly an HDTV capable TV which was the sneaky marketing ploy developed by some to say the panel on the tv was ok but not the inputs required (I believe at least one HiDef input is required to have the HDTV Ready "tick" logo"

Are you forgetting component HD? HD TVs have been around for quite a while now, and HDMI is a *relatively* new feature. The US have had them for the better part of a decade, and those US HDTV owners will likely not have HDMI, but component.

HDMI & DVI are pretty much the same, bar audio being transferred with HDMI, they are a digital connection, and in theory the better connection type.

Your other HD connection is component, and that shares its similarities with VGA, but it's still a HD system.

As for the texture thing, there is always a limit on how much the GPU/cell will be able to handle texutes and resolutions, so say 1024x1024 could be the maximum size, Though blu-ray would probably be able to accomodate for 10000x10000 sized resolutions, the PS3 wouldn't be able to cope. That's how I see it, and it's just an example.
