Sales down dramatically on second week of release
Sales of the PlayStation 3 have dropped dramatically on the second week of release in the UK, with official Chart Track figures revealing a fall of 82 per cent.
Chart Track data is gathered from 7000 UK retail outlets representing 90 per cent of the software market, including ****, ***********, ****.***, **** and ***.
A spokesperson for Chart Track confirmed the figure to GamesIndustry.biz this afternoon, stating: "Yes, sales of PS3 hardware have dropped by 82 per cent."
Last week, Chart Track revealed that the PlayStation 3 had sold 165,000 units in the first two days following the launch, making it the fastest-selling home console in the UK.
"We publish the first week figures because there's such a clamour for them that we can't keep it a secret," said the spokesperson.
This week's software charts revealed that sales of the top two PlayStation 3 titles, Resistance: Fall of Man and MotorStorm, had dropped by over 60 per cent.

So…

Sales during day 1-2: 165,000
Sales during day 3-9: 29,700

A lot of forumites are trying to paint a doom and gloom scenerio from this. I think it tells us little other than it lauched, everyone who wanted one got one then it still managed to pick up 30k stragglers the week after. And 30k is still pretty good for a week imo in just the UK.

It's a shame that there is no published sales data for consoles in the UK. You can find weekly Japanese and Monthly USA sales but nothing in the UK.

Is 30,000 a week considered good or bad?

If the stories are true about the number of PS3s in stock at competitors around the country, I don't see how this can be anything but bad news for Sony. I always thought the retail industry doesn't like to keep huge numbers of items in stock, they prefer to keep a few items, and re-order when people actually buy it. Sony released the number of PS3s they did because they expected them to be sold, they aren't being sold and it doesn't look like they will get sold soon.

Those sales aren't too bad, but if you look at ratio's then it's 1/5th of the first week sales, which isn't great. Especially as more people get paid at the end of a month (I believe?).

Anyway, have you bought one yet?

I've still got a lot of things I want to play on the 360 and there's nothing 'making' me buy one just yet. Resistance whilst looking great fun mp, looks a bit average single. Motorstorm looks pretty enough but could bore me tears. Every screen shot of GT:HD wows me however, I will say that.

Give it till xmas and I'm sure something will come out to make me really consider one.

I keep looking at Wii's as well (even asked in **** in Hull) but I keep thinking after Zelda, and Wii Sports has lost it's impact what's there to do?

You should pop over for the w'end with your (unopened??) Wii and let me and the mrs have a proper go.

Once the price falls further and more games are available it will start to pick up and I wouldn't be surprised if it's another runaway scenario a la PS1/PS2.

As it is now only the hardcore gamers will buy it (more expensive/less games) and as we know the hardcore gamers aren't the ones who have made the Playstation brand such a success.

The deals are getting better, but they are still damn expensive.

I only got one as I managed to get a new UK PS3 with Motorstorm and RFOM plus an extra controller for £460 In store (Incase it breaks, don't want the fuss of sending it back).

It I had to pay full whack I wouldn't of bothered.

So for your average joe that isn't a gadget whore like me it's damn hard to justify spending that amount of cash on a console.

I'm curious whether week2 sales include returned stock? I know of at least 3 personal friends that bought one to stick on auction, but have since returned for a refund - somewhat bizare, but I actually know more people that have returned them than I do those that have kept them! :D

Very true - but this is probably affecting MS even more severly due to their quality control problems

I actually think the Easter sales will be higher than the weeks previously but thats just a guess.

I dont think 30,000 sales is bad for just the UK for week after launch in the middle of the year but certainly room for improvement

they need to release some better games for the ps3, everyone i know who has got one says the games r poor so far, that is from word of mouth tho so dont hold me to it :)

maybe thats why the sales are the way they are

If they can shift 30,000 units a week then thats good for the uk at this time of year (and price).

It's annoying that sales figures seem to get overlooked for Europe (common trend in this industry), but early report are that over 650,000 units have been sold in Europe since launch.

The fact that Resistance:FOM and Motorstorm still maintained 2nd and 3rd position in the all format charts (beaten only by a big release from CnC3) shows that sales are still strong for this time of year.

I guess the real test will be if they can maintain this figure through April.
