PS3 vs 360 graphics

interesting... though I would point out that the both shots were taken at 720p - it's possible the ps3 looks better at 1080p...

Wonder how they have taken the shots anyway? A lot of the difference seems to be just contrast/brightness issues?

Yea i thought that 2 lol, though some textures looked pants on the PS3 considering theyve had a year longer to make it better than the 360 :/

There's a great ten page article at

http://dpad.gotfrag.com/portal/story/35372/?cpage=1

that goes in depth of the specifications of each console.

PS3 may have more CPU power, but the 360 has a faster GPU (96 billion shader ops vs 74 billion shader ops) and a much more flexible archetecture with 48 pipelines that can be used for pixel or vertex, compared to the PS3 GPU's fixed 24 pixel/shader and 8 vertex pipelines.

TBH both consoles look identical in comparision judging by them screenshots, I like some of the 360 ones and i also like some of the PS3 ones.

In the end does £200 or more justify the difference in the PS3 shots that i liked if your not interested in Blu-Ray, for me NO, for me this is where the 360 wins.

Hardly any PS3 games support 1080p yet. Even on 720p games, there are still framerate problems on it.

People forgot it is about GPU (graphic processing unit) that made the difference, not CPU!

a year longer to make what better than the 360? the spec for gfx was set aages ago.

infact i would argue the opposite and say that the late dev kits have meant that dev's havent had the same time to play around on PS3 as the 360 and that is why we are seeing same games with slightly better gfx on the 360?

People don't buy the PS3 because they think its cross-platform games are going to look any better than the 360. They buy it for PS3 exclusive games (and/or the blu-ray player).

Great stuff, was waitting for something like this to pop up.

It seems the Xbox 360 has the upper had atleast with games that are out now for each console, im sure there will be a lot more improvements for the PS3 to come as 360 is over a year ahead but then the 360 will see more improvements.

I'll still end up geting a PS3 when prices come down as there will be quite a few games i would want to play (MGS, GT etc...) im very happy with my xbox 360 at the moment, Gears Of war is just awsome :D

I think this console war is going to be a close one and its all going to be down to which console can get the best games to draw more people in, also which will win out of Blue Ray or HD-DVD as im sure there will be people who will buy which is more future proof so to speak.

Well I thought Sony and EA said that they had managed to make Fight Night look almost twice as good on the PS3, yet another lie

Lighting isnt as good, crowd look like a xbox/ps2 crowd , background scenery like the flags are awful on the PS3, and the only difference that you could say is better is that the muscle definition seems a lot better

I really think becuase of the lead in terms of time to get used to develop on the 360, Microsoft is gonna storm this generation

I prefer Need for speed carbon on the PS3.

Call Of Duty looks about the same, Just darker on the 360, yet smoother on the PS3.

Again, maddan looks pretty much the same apart from the GPU difference, Different colours on screen, No more than that. Texture dont look different or anything.

Again, Marvel Ultimate alliance just seems darker on the 360, Texture wise no improvements between the 2.

NBA looks the same on both machines, I initially thought the reflections were missing on PS3, But it looks like the screenshots were taken at different times.

360's version of fightnight is nicer than the 360 for 1 reason, The lights. Other than that, No difference.

Then i got bored of looking through them, Because like i said, for most of them the only difference is the PS3 is lighter, the 360 darker, No texture differences I can see.

Hmm ok but im not console expert, andone got a quick rundown on why its taken sony a year after xbox to appear if the gfx was set ages ago? apart from the blu-ray delays.

Would be interesting to see the tiemframes from dev kits being released to game release dates for both consoles, as Ive always been curious to know.

Personally, I really dont think there is much in it, which when you are comparing launch PS3 title to 1 year in 360 titles must give the PS3 a little advantage. The cost side of things is on the 360s side, as why pay more if you only want to play games? The exclusives are becoming less and less of a draw to the consoles.

Still think it will all come down to the HD-DVD and Blu-ray battle as to which console prevails.

The PS3 may also have an advantage in reliability (too early to say yet) and in its noise level. I am planning to buy a 360 but only if they fix its inherent reliability problems and its loud volume. Otherwise I never will.
