My dad said he fancied a PS3 so he could play games like COD. I have no idea about consoles really, is a PS3 better than a 360 or the other way around?

He's looking at spending no more than £180 and to include at least 1 game like COD. I'm looking second hand and they can be had for around £150 for 160gb, 2 controllers and a game or 2

Which console is more prone to errors like 'ring of death' ?

Video wise I think they are very similar so imho it's down to things like how the controller feels and similar things.

I have a 360.

These type of threads never go well!!

If he's not bothered about Blu Ray i'd go with the 360. Also if he likes games like COD he'll probably prefer other 360 exclusive games such as Halo!

Does he have a blue ray player already? It's a massive benefit of the ps3 if he doesn't.

Games tend to be fairly similar, though arguably ps3 has some better exclusives with the uncharted series for example.

If you have a blu-ray player get an xbox, if not get a ps3.

And if that is not a consideration then get your dad to try the controllers for each console at a mates or in a store and pick it based on which one he prefers.

Remember you have to pay for xbox live and not for psn but if you can afford £40 a year it's not a big issue.

In my experience the PS3 download times are considerably slower than the 360 but never so much that if you keep it up to date it is a problem.

If you're just playing COD go on the controllers because neither console is much better than the other in any of their unique ways and both have exclusives (PS3 more action, xbox more family/arcade and driving).

Also my brother has added that my dad finds the xbox easier to use as he is not that computer/tech savvy.

Does your father wish to play these games online? I've played both 360 & PS3 versions of COD online and the 360, although superior, doesn't completely outshine the PS3. Also take into consideration the fact that you must pay for the 360 XBLive service via subscription or pre-paid cards.

Multimedia wise, Microsoft have really stepped up their game with their 360 services but these mainly rely on internet broadband speed so you can stream movies etc. On the flip side, the PS3 doubles up as a blu-ray player (and this can update itself, to constantly be the "best" blu-ray, 3D etc).

As I have both (console whore, I know) I find it really hard to chose between them. Kinda like your children, couldn't really pick a favourite one (not to their faces anyway).

TL;DR

If he only cares about online play, go 360.

If he fancies a little multimedia and a cheaper, albeit perfectly decent online experience, go PS3.

Have both. PS3 is mainly my Blu-Ray player other than exclusive games to the console but tbh almost all of my gaming is online and for that alone XBox Live is the way to go (for me, at least). You have to pay for the privilege of XBL, though I think it's worth it.

Either way though, they are both really decent and if all you want is CoD you might as well toss a coin to decide.

my prefer ps3 and i have both, not batteries in the controllers, blu-ray player but other than that there is no real difference, other things to include would be the kind of games you enjoy most of course are on both, Youve got uncharted, killzone and god of war on ps3 or gears of war, halo and fable on 360. Id be slightly more inclined to say ps3 but xbox is still a very good machine (the new one) steer well clear of the old one is prone to break easy. Oh and all this xbox live being better is nosense i have both and there really is no difference other that cross game chat (talking to other friend on different games) which i really begrudge the fact i pay for that when im getting it frr on ps3

If it's for your Dad, then probably PS3, it will save him having to pay for online if he rarely uses it

if he wants a better online experience with loads of people to talk to then get a 360 and pay £30 a year for live

if he wants to play games occasionally and use as a blu ray player then get a ps3 with its free online.

i have both, and i prefer the ps3 simply because its free to play online and it hasn't died yet, im on my 3rd 360 from launch, and on my first ps3 from launch.

if your going second hand, try and get a slim 360 or a slim ps3, older models are more prone to dying.
