Hi all,

Been out of gaming since N64/PS2 era, would like to get a PS3 but noticed there were a few verions - slim, super slim etc,

Apart from size, are there any other advnatges from one to the other?

Also, is it possible to watch iPlayer/Youtube though PS3?

Thanks,

Slim is the best looking and quietest, not sure on the reliability of the super slim but I don't recall reading about any major problems. You might have trouble finding a new slim though so that's something to bare in mind. It's possible to watch iPlayer, I'm not sure if there's a YouTube app, I think there is but personally I've never seen or used it.

Thank you,

Will aim for the super-slim then,
I notice most come with hard drives (500gb) I presume this is for downloaded games which play direct from HDD?

The super-slim model is the only one available new. You'll want the 500GB one as many games do have a mandatory install.

Yeah exactly, as well as DLC, films, music etc. You can't install all disc-based games to the HDD like you can on the 360, but certain games do allow you to do this.

Sounds ideal, really looking forward to playing some games again,

When you say films, music - can I transfer files from USB to HDD or does all content need to come from a certain source?

You can watch/play stuff via a USB device, network device or copy it (from USB or network) to the PS3's own HDD. It's a great media player, better than the 360 and both the next-gen consoles in fact.

You can transfer them to the PS3:

The following types of files can be played under Video:

Memory Stick Video Format

MPEG-4 SP (AAC LC)
H.264/MPEG-4 AVC High Profile (AAC LC)
MPEG-2 TS(H.264/MPEG-4 AVC, AAC LC)
MP4 file format

H.264/MPEG-4 AVC High Profile (AAC LC)
MPEG-1 (MPEG Audio Layer 2)
MPEG-2 PS (MPEG2 Audio Layer 2, AAC LC, AC3(Dolby Digital), LPCM)
MPEG-2 TS(MPEG2 Audio Layer 2, AC3(Dolby Digital), AAC LC)
MPEG-2 TS(H.264/MPEG-4 AVC, AAC LC)
AVI

Motion JPEG (Linear PCM)
Motion JPEG (μ-Law)
AVCHD (.m2ts / .mts)
DivX
WMV

VC-1(WMA Standard V2)

You're probably better off installing PS3 Media Server on your PC though, that way you won't need to use up any of your HDD space on the console. It also converts films on the fly if they aren't a suitable file type.
