I have been asked to set up a wireless network at a friends house and she wants her PS3 connecting to the wireless network do the PS3`s come with inbuilt wifi or will it require anything extra?

Built in wifi, should be no harder than connecting any other device to a WLAN.
(I have not tried it myself though)

It's as easy as setting a wireless laptop up :)
There is one thing you need to know though. I had to buy a new router because PS3 doesn't accept B signals very well - you need to get a G one.
 
This is the first thread I could find regarding PS3 WiFi. Hopefully SebC's suggestion will work. I have my router set up for Mixed mode (b and g). I am unable to get the PS3 to get an IP address, even though it detects the signal at 100%. I even tried disabling security temporarily. I'll try switching it over to just G and see if that helps.

Sounds odd, but try switching the PS3 off at the plug for a few mins, then give it another go.
My PS3 went a bit weird once and wouldn't pick up the IP from my router through wifi or wired connections, but that seemed to sort it out.
Alternatively, you can look up online how to set it all up manually.

As per usual, we have someone talking out of their rear.
The PS3 runs perfectly well on B signals, if it doesn't then there's something wrong with your setup. I'd guess that its because G signals have a much better range/ penetration than B signals, and swapping out the old router just gave a better signal. Don't forget that the signal strength is not a very good indicator of whether or not the connection is actually there.

If you're having problems, I'd also try entering the SSID manually, as opposed to letting the PS3 find it via scannning; This may work a little better. Even if the signal is detecting at 100%, I'd also try it with the router next to the PS3 as a test to rule out signal issues.

Beware if you have a Netgear wireless gateway/router. I've got one and had trouble setting the PS3 up to it. It turned out the PS3 didn't like the WPA/PSK authentication mode that the netgear was using.

I ended up having to downgrade the firmware on the router to an older version and that sorted it.
 
Cold-reset didn't work. Wireless-G setting only didn't work. Manually entering SSID didn't work. Manually configuring IP address, etc... Works! Woo hoo!

Which router do you have? Only reason I ask is I did some wifi tests with my Netgear DG834Gt for some other user the other day (normally I use wired) and I connected fine just letting it scan my SSID, WPA key and DHCP for IP address. I use mixed mode fyi.

i must admit, i ended up using a wired connection for my ps3. and my pc, wireless was just driving me crazy. despite trying two different routers - one being a wrt54g and the other an 'enterprise class' wireless-N router - i could never get full speed or any sort of reliability from either of them.

I've got 13 wireless items on my network and have set up countless others. I've had problems with some laptops, even on my WLAN, but the PS3 sailed through that.
