following on from the 1 million PS3's sold thread -

That was the bullish claim of SCEE president and CEO David Reeves this week, who revealed that PS3 has already outsold 360 in certain territories such as France, Spain, Germany and Italy.

In an exclusive interview, Reeves told MCV that in December PS3, PSP and PS2 all sold over a million units each in the PAL region.

And although Sony Corporation is yet to announce full global sales figures, Reeves provided a snapshot of PS3’s PAL performance so far, whilst predicting the leap ahead of Xbox 360 within the next few months.

“In December we sold just over a million PlayStation 3s during the month,” he told MCV. “That’s across all PAL territories and that’s a sell-through figure. About 20-22 per cent of that figure was sold in the UK alone

We’re very happy with the performance of PS3 in the UK.

“We don’t often mention the competition, but I will give you some interesting data: In terms of installed base in some of our major markets, such as France, Spain, Germany and Italy – plus some distributor territories in smaller markets like Switzerland – our current cumulative installed base is now higher than Xbox 360.
“It has not yet reached that in the UK. But the team here expect to overtake the installed base of Xbox 360 across all PAL territories in late summer. It’s also worth mentioning that last week we outsold Xbox 360 in PAL territories by a ratio of three to one.”

not long to go now. Microsoft need that price cut and soon

Well because its better on 360 as we all know, so why not? Cheaper console, better game for yo money?

its one of this years huge games.

Because you have all the details and have played the game? I dont think the difference would sway anyone to buy a console if they already had one that could play it

I doubt it

GTAIV release, 360 = win

Do we take your word for it. Your post is just asking for flames to start flickereing. It will help both machines and those with a wii will think why is it not out for the wii. It will increase sales of both machines. The downloaded content might or will sell more 360 copies.

since when has rationality ever sold consoles? Just because the 360 version will likely be the superior version people will still buy a PS3 for it.

My own personal opinion is the PS3 is onlyselling more now purely because of Blu-Ray movies (with HD-DVD going down the pan) and the price cut. It's certainly not the games. I don't care for Blu-Ray at all and still won't buy a PS3 for gaming as they are no exclusive games out on it I want to play. This may change in the future but for now the 360 serves all my gaming needs.

Still for those who don't have a 360 it definitely has its attractions over the 360. As said, Blu-Ray (if you want it for that), supposed reliability, it's apparently quieter than the 360 and then there's all the cross platform games.

I dont think its cause GTA IV that it will sell well. I said it in the other thread about PS3 sales and ill say it again:

The PS3 is selling better because people realised its a brilliant Blu-Ray player, and due to the recent events upon HD-DVD, lots more people want Blu-Ray so they got a PS3. It is the cheapest and most future proof player out there at the minute.

the funnest thing though in the long run the future isn't blue ray or hd dvd tbh
give it a year or 2 and people will be streaming films direct in 720/1080p via sky boxs or other thing thats the future so this so called new age of disk won't last any amount of time that dvd did when it came out!!

People will always want a physical disk, and our internet is nowhere near streaming 1080p quality yet. Fellow members on here would probably go for streaming over a disc, but the general public won't.

Ermm DVD has lasted years and will continue to last for years until HD disks become standard.

I would say the next best thing would be an HTPC for streaming, not Sky because its just satellite. What your saying is that Sky will eventually streaming films at 720p/1080p (it already does 720p/1080i) and that will kill the new Hi Def DVD market? Highly highly doubt that.

no you have the wrong idea lmao

I think there's also a backdrop here that needs to be discussed: In 2007, DVD sales softened significantly. For the first time in a number of years, they flattened and started to go down, which echoes what's been happening with CDs for most of the decade.

Now, there's a big difference between downloading a six-megabyte song from iTunes versus downloading a conventional movie that's about 700 MB, versus an HD movie which is how many gigabytes. So obviously the sense of scale is significantly different between audio and video/movie and high-def content, but there are lessons in the CD and now the DVD experience. DVD is a mature medium. You've pretty much sold as many players to consumers as you're going to sell; what you're selling today are replacement devices. As well as discs, everyone has a fairly sizable collection of DVDs that they've bought over the years, and they don't really see the need to continue to add to that at the same pace that they have in years past because they only have so much shelf space.

And at the same time, the perceived differences between high-def DVDs...Never mind that the format war has caused people to take a wait-and-see attitude, and to hold onto their DVDs longer, but now that we have the DVDs in our library, for most of us, that's good enough. For most of us, an upconverting DVD player, or throwing an old DVD onto a new player, on a high-def set, is good enough for now. We're not willing to spend hundreds of dollars on new players and thousands of dollars to replace our media, simply to get a few extra lines of resolution. The technical quality jump between DVD and Blu-ray is smaller than the technical quality jump was between video cassette and DVD was a decade ago. So there isn't this great, big push to abandon DVDs, but at the same time, consumers are tired of them, and they're starting to winnow down their purchasing patterns.

this is why hd/blue ray disks won't take over like dvds did and why internet streaming will take hold!!

plus i wasn't talking about steaming on sky i ment internet streaming when fiber comes in the uk as standerd which should be by 2010-2015

the plan via bt is to have 30-50mb sec links in houses which will be able to stream full hd/blue ray movies via the net

One of the reasons why there were two formats duking it out for the longest time, was because of a disagreement between the major players over how to handle the issue of something called managed copy. It involved a player's direct connection to the Internet, and in the future, for those consoles that had burning capabilities, it would presumably enable that Internet connection to be able to download and distribute the movies as well, and you could burn your own Blu-ray or HD DVD copy, depending on how the managed copy was implemented. But at the very least, it would enable somebody who had purchased a disc to maybe make one backup copy, but not two. And that still required an Internet connection because the studio would serve as a broker for that.

I see your point, but again it goes back to what Inoshishi was saying. People will want a physical copy of the film or product. It will be a very very long time until we all will get content from the internet and there will be no physical product. Film companies will be very reluctant to remove their DVD's from the shelves and only supply their content over the air. Im not saying it wont happen, it probably will in a good while. But i wouldn't say that there will be no market for the next gen DVDs (Blu-Ray) because it will lead the same path that DVD's have done until the next new thing comes out.
