PS3 wireless router?

Not asking for me, myself or indeed I - I am however asking for a friend :p

Basically he is having large issues with his PS3 dropping the wireless connection, and telling him that it is DNS errors, he believes these to be an issue with the router (no idea of the name) but is going to get his PS3 checked anyway (read he is going to see if it does it with my ps3 :p).

Anyways on to the point of this post, before you have clicked back and escaped the ramble /wave oh you are still there :) Anyone recommend a wireless router that works really nicely for PS3, 360, and Wii, also his laptop. He is using Virgin (cable customer). Price is anything up to around 60 to 65 Pounds.

Thanks :)

P.S why did I write this post weird - no idea actually, I am just bored so trying to entertain myself :p

Netgear DGN2000 works well with my Wii, Ps3, Phone and Laptop. Make sure UPnP is turned on before buying anything tho - the Ps3 is pretty finicky

I am pretty sure he forwarded all the ports and the like - though I am not 100 percent since I didn't set it up, but from what he explained on the phone it sounded like all his basis are covered.

So Be Box and DGN2000... anyone know the best ? O.o

Well I wouldn't go as far as giving the DGN2000 a glowing recommendation, but it's the first router i've had since my old trusty cable router from 8 years ago that lets me VPN into work, all my consoles can connect to and port forwards correctly. Mostly it's fine.

Note, I gave up on wifi - but this is more of an issue living in an apartment block and having 20 other wifi networks in close proximity swamping the airways. The PS3 could connect to it just fine when I was running it tho.

Yeah - openDNS he has tried as well as virgins own ones.

I am pretty sure he has UpnP off, and the ports open.

As far as I know, he can play for a several hours sometimes, then gets signed out and told DNS error... I haven't seen the problem first hand though or his settings, but he seemed to have researched what ports to open.

Tbf the be box is crap compared to others, only reason I use it is because I changed from orange to BE* and this is better than what I had lol

Also as above I have given up on WiFi I now use Homeplugs. Shove one in at the router power socket, shove another beside PS3, and connect ethernet cable to PS3. Wired connection f.t.w!!

Exactly what I did for a friend who had continuous wireless dropouts with his PS3 and Sky BB Router.

For the cost of a new router, we went out and bought 2 85mbps Homeplugs and he has never looked back.

+1 for this. I got some of the Develo 200Mbit jobbies, and am getting stable, near Fast Ethernet throughput throughout the house. Was £70 for the pair at a certain well known high street retailer with a purple logo and annoying jingle.

Does anyone have a diagram or something of how this works? O.o

Router takes signal from telephone box, ethernet cable into a homeplug from the router. The electrical cable takes it to the other homeplug near your PS3 then an ethernet cable from there into your PS3

There's a few caveats with Homeplugs:

They have to be on the same ringmain otherwise they'll either not work or work poorly. Generally all of the plug sockets in a flat will be on the same ringmain - but larger houses may have seperate ringmains per floor. (Check the switch/fuse box)

If you have some crazy old wiring in your house with the white goods (fridges/washing machines etc) you'll get crap performance because these dump loads of interference onto the mains.

Some poorly done flat conversions won't have the electrics updated and you may be on the same ringmain as your neighbours and god knows what they've plugged in.

I live in an apartment block, and each flat has it's own switch box that's too small to have seperate ringmains & there's far too many BT Homehubs crapping over the airwaves so it's perfect for me. (Had some bad experiences with some Netgear 85's, replaced with Devolo 200's and they are gravy)
