PS3 wont background download.

Hi.
Ive noticed this in the past few days: my ps3 wont download stuff in the background anymore.
Doesnt do it during DVDs, or during GTA4.

The only thing thats changed hardware wise lately is that its plugged into a gigabit switch rarther than my router, but it still signs in correctly?

Ideas?
 
can you force it download with in-game xmb? if this is not a feature then i hope they include it in a future patch :(

it doesnt let you dl during dvd/bd playback as it signs you out but it would be nice to have the option to be online and dl in the background :/

So, short of doing nout on the PS3, i cant download whilst playing a game, watching a DVD, watching a BR or nout else?

Bit rubbish that is.
Wonder why i could download during things in the past?
Was pretty handy that was, set a few videos to download whilst i played on GTA or whatever.

So my PS3 is basically functioning correctly?
 
It's designed to prevent lag when playing online. Sadly some stupid games like GTA4 maintain a connection to PSN even when not being played online. Most other single player games work fine as you would expect.

Not sure why you can't do it during DVD/BD playback, though I think they have said they are working on it.
 
So, summed up:

Can during games with no online play/connection.
Can during FAH & Internet.
Can during videos played off the HDD.
Cant during DVD/BR.

Rumored to be adding: Can during DVD/BR.

Why dont they add it to the online game thing as well, QoS would sort any lag right out?

It can't be to do with memory as offline games (even heavily demanding ones like MGS4) background download just fine. I imagine they've just disabled it to keep online gaming as smooth as possible, QoS will still have a minor effect on pings etc (although probably negligible)

Not if configured correctly it wont. Packet prioritization.;)

Having said that though, to ensure it works, it would need all devices on the 'home' network to support it. Which would alienate 90% of the home network market.

Exactly :D

I've only ever had one router that utilized a sufficient QoS system and that was a linux based router that i personally upgraded to DD-WRT firmware. Any normal consumer would probably wet themselves and run away if i even attempted to explain to them what QoS was, let alone teach them how to install their own firmware on an affordable router and configure it. Nearly all of us here are what would probably be classed as the top 10% of consumers in regards to computer knowledge and skill, sometimes i find i have to sit back and view it from my parents perspective to realize why lots of things are done certain ways in the technology industry, this is one of those situations.

In an ideal (and more intelligent) world you would have been absolutely correct about QoS, unfortunately we live in a world filled with larger swilling louts that want to 'pop a cap in some fools' online so we have to accommodate for them :).
