PS3 wont read games/DVD's! Help!

Bro in laws PS3 has stopped reading games and DVD's etc. I've tried a reset and formatted the drive but still doesnt work. It doesnt even register the disc or spin up....

Any ideas?

Dead diode by the sounds of it, call Sony tech support and they'll send you a replacement.

It is over a year old. Would they still cover this? What exactly do you mean by diode?

Been plenty of repor
ts of late of Sony fixing consoles out of warrenty so i would try them first. If not you will have to pay depending on how much it may be easier getting a replacement drive unit for the PS3.

I'm unsure tbh, i know a few people who have had free repairs outside of the warranty without issue but i don't want to promise you anything. By diode i mean the bit that emits the laser that reads the disk. If Sony want to charge you loads of money for repair you can buy new diodes for like £30 on an auction site and apparently it isn't too difficult to fit.
