PS3 Worth the Wait?

Hello all,

I'm in the market for a new games console and I'm just wondering if the Sony PS3 is going to be worth the wait. I've always been a Sony Playstation fanboy, I still own a fully boxed PS1 and PS2, never had an Xbox. I'm thinking whether I should complete the collection when the PS3 comes out or bite the bullet and grab a Xbox 360 bundle before Xmas to get a half decent deal.

I've got a few questions though:

The PS3 pad, will this be dispensible, as in will I have to chuck it away when the battery cycle fully drains in the 1-2 year life?

What is the equivalent to Xbox Live on the PS3? Is it any good? Will it cost? If so, how much? (Xbox live is £35/yr IIRC)

Is Pro Evo going to be released on the PS3? If so, when?

Is the March EU release date cemented? Or is it a rough guide?

Can you forsee any potention problems with the PS3, like there is with the launch date Xbox 360's?

Overall cost. If I wanted a PS3, with HDD, online play (wirelessly), 2 pads and a couple of games (equivalent to an xbox 360 premium bundle), how much more can you see this being than an Xbox 360 premium bundle at the moment?

I'll probably have some more questions, so any help on the above is appreciated.

I think the ps3 pad will last more than a year.

From what ive been told its free to play online, everthing else you pay for.

I wouldnt put any money on it.

It will take few years for all the fault to apear on the ps3's

Its a new, complicated product that is being mass marketed for the first time, there is a huge potential for there to be problems with it. However, we will only know after the initial launch.

My money is on the BluRay drives exploding :p

AFAIK Yess it will be desposable, there may be websites that sell new battaries and there may be future implementations of the controlpad, with replaceable batteries (who knows). They will hopefully last approx 2 years depending on use and hopefully you can play and charge.

Thus far it is untested, it will be free but how free is the question. Xbox live offers a signifficant amount of free downloads and game demos I doubt Sony will (as they will need to recoup their costs). Also performance and continuity might be an issue. As I said its untested/reviewed so we don't know. Id say wait and see on this one.

Yes, but I'm not sure when

Its as cemented as the Spring 06 and November 06 dates.

I would imagine the first and second generations will be tempermental. As were the PS1 and PS2 consoles

the PS3 costs about £450 you will have to buy a bundle which will probably be 3 games so add another £150. another controler will be about £30 so you are looking at approx £630.

No problems ask away

Most of the answers really will be wait and see, as none of us have played this or can not see into the future, but can make reasonable guesses:

The PS3 pad, will this be dispensible, as in will I have to chuck it away when the battery cycle fully drains in the 1-2 year life?

One of those wait and see ones. As it's one solid object the batteries could potentially lose their charge over time. How long this will be will probably be more down to how much you charge the thing and how much you play the thing.

At the moment, it seems that the PS3 Network will be free, but you will have to pay to download things like demos etc, so it's kind of a switch from the Live way. This will suit some, and annoy others, as personally I'd rather pay for content and a yearly sub rather than pay for demos etc, as you can download stuff on Xbox Live Silver totally free, just you can't play games online.

Is Pro Evo going to be released on the PS3? If so, when?

Yes, don't know though.

Most likely will be launched then.

Can you forsee any potention problems with the PS3, like there is with the launch date Xbox 360's?

Potentially, yes, the PS3 could have the same problems, if not more than the 360. We have the Blu-Ray drive, a new technology, which could potentailly die on us, and the new Cell Processor also. This will be a wait and see thing as usual, and will totally depend on how good Sony's quality control in manufacturing the PS3 and its components is.

Overall cost. If I wanted a PS3, with HDD, online play (wirelessly), 2 pads and a couple of games (equivalent to an xbox 360 premium bundle), how much more can you see this being than an Xbox 360 premium bundle at the moment?

PS3 60GB £425
Extra Controller: £30
2* Games: £80
Total: £535

Xbox 360
Premium Bundle: £300 (Includes 1 Game + 1 Extra Wireless Controller)
Wireless Adapter: £60
Extra Game: £40
Live Sub: £35
Total: £435

If you wanted High Definition DVD playback, you already have it on the PS3, you'd need to add another £130 onto the 360 price.

Depends on what you want from a console really, I'd personally recommend getting an Xbox 360 now because it's cheaper, available now, has a great online system(with free demos/trailers) and will have a great selection of games by the end of the month.

You most likely won't get your hands on a PS3 for a while unless your lucky, and I would only consider getting the PS3 if you were diehard MGS4 fan, or a fan of any other Sony exclsuive game. And then there's the pricetag :D

Thanks for the replies chaps.

A couple of my mates have an xbox 360 but I've only used one and I've been impressed to be fair.

Some very valid points, how much would a premium xbox 360 be worth in a years time with say 5 games, 2 pads and a wireless adapter? Potential price drops on the xbox 360's when the PS3 is released?

The battery, like any other battery, will eventually lose its ability to charge, but this won't be for a long time. When it does fully drain, Sony will have a service in place so you can exchange the old controller for a new one. Whether this service will be free or not is unknown at the moment.

The online service has no name right now and might never have one, but it is a proper service similar to Xbox Live. Unlike Live there will be no 'silver' and 'gold', just one standard service which is free to use. This includes playing online games. Like Xbox Live, there will be some content that must be purchased if you want it.

Is the March EU release date cemented? Or is it a rough guide?
Sony have recently repeated their "6 million by March 2007" target, indicating that production is improving and they are confident of that figure. They also stated in September that they plan to have 1 million units ready for EU launch (they said this after the announcment of the cuts in number of units for initial launch). However, there is always a chance that the EU launch might slip to April or May though.

Can you forsee any potention problems with the PS3, like there is with the launch date Xbox 360's?
Absolutely.

Overall cost. If I wanted a PS3, with HDD, online play (wirelessly), 2 pads and a couple of games (equivalent to an xbox 360 premium bundle), how much more can you see this being than an Xbox 360 premium bundle at the moment?
At the moment it looks like only the 60GB model is launching in EU, so that would cost you £425 + £35-£40 (approx) for an extra controller. The games will cost £40 each at online retailers, so that would make a total of £540. However, there will be console + game bundles available so the actual cost would probably be more like £520 or less. This includes the 60GB HDD and of course the Blu-ray disc player, so if you want those features then the price shouldn't be a problem.
The 20GB model will probably be around £375 if/when it is released here.

A price drop in February/March would make a lot of sense as it is just before the EU launch. Price drop just before Xmas (ie before the US/Japan launch) doesn't seem likely, and the PS3 is already more expensive anyway.

Is it worth the wait? Yes Imo.

Without meaning to start a potentially long thread, how on earth can you say that something is worth the wait, when it's not been released yet? It's like saying Spider-Man 3 is the best movie of 2007 when it's not even been finished yet.

Whether it will be worth the wait will be determined over the course of a year or more, whether the hardware and exclusive software has been worth waiting for (if you decided to get one over an Xbox 360 for example).

I see what you mean and i see the sense in what you are getting across. If going by the final spec of the console and what the list of games available now, plus the fact that the OP has owned past playstations that's why i said so and lets not forget am a fanboy so dont try convincing me becasue i refuse to see it.

Seriously, i dont know why i said that but i would think it is the fanboy instinct in me. (See, it is because of things like this i dont post in games section that much... :p ) :o

Get a 360 mate. I've had a quick go on a mate of mines and like you, I've been impressed with what I saw. Some great games being released in the run up to xmas as well.

Either console you get you are going to have bundles of fun, so you might as well get the Xbox 360 and join in the fun for christmas. Look at the titles you can get for christmas, Gears of War, Call of Duty 3, Next-gen pro evo and fifa, theres a lot more as well. Someone posted on here not that long ago, linking to an article that reckoned the ps3 could be delayed until May in Europe, and as you might have read its going to be harder to import one and even if you do you wont have a warranty or anything. I would say the Xbox is the safest choice and as a bonus its also cheaper, the PS3 has lost a lot of exclusives so you wont be missing out on that much, but you will be gaining gears of war, halo 3 to name a couple...

As for live being £35, it is available cheaper than this, my friend bought a £15 halo 2 with live so managed to save £20.

Spot on. Plus there's a huge back catalogue of great games that can be had 2nd hand now.
