My 40GB PS3 just died on me, and now I'm not sure what to do. I thought that it wouldn't bother me much but then I realised that it's the only blu-ray player I have, and it has MGS4 :( I bought the console ages ago, so it's well out of its warranty (got the console about 2007-2008'ish). I have contacted Sony but they just told me to phone them and quote a reference number. I've heard that repairs will cost me except not sure how much, does anyone know how much it'll be?

I'm not afraid to open up the console and reflow the cpu or gpu, but my only concern is that it'll only last at max, from what I've read, 3 months. To be honest, I kinda want this to be a last resort but if it needs to be done then I'll do it. Ideally, I would want a reball but can't find anyone doing it in my area besides London :/

a reflow, some good thermal paste and a clean out of all the dust etc should last you a few months hopefully.

im a cheapskate, so id keep doing that personally. Getting sony to repair it will probably not be worth it.

I want to do that but then I look at that warranty sticker; I don't know what's wrong with me but I don't like taking off warranty stickers xD

But yeah, how many months did your PS3 last after the reflow? Does it decrease the more you do it? Also will arctic silver 5 paste do?

It's out of warranty, the sticker doesn't mean anything now!

I did the reflow on my 40GB a few weeks back, I'm guessing I didn't do it very well as it only lasted about 10 minutes, but it was long enough to recover my save data which was all I really wanted anyway.

Do you have reflowing equitment?

I doubt it.

You need a preheater, hot air station etc.

I did heatgun reflows for a few months and noticed they where lasting a few weeks.

Now with a professional reflow you can make a reflow last 1 year plus. And a good reball last 2-3 years.

When you heatgun "reflow" all you do is warp the board so that the solder balls make temporary connections with the solder pads on the motherboard and on the BGA.

I've had a heatgun reflowed console up and running for 2 years now. 360s even longer!

So its extremely possible that a heatgun reflow could work, Its better than the oven method put it that way :D
