PS3 YLOD :(

so... just got the yellow led of death on my ps3

its 2 (maybe 3? - whenever the 40GB was released) years old so I have no warranty come back. I'm wondering how many people have successfully fixed the problem themselves and if it viable? or have I just lost £100 to get it fixed?

My 2 year old 40gb now ramps the fans up now and again. It never did this before. If/when it breaks, I'll buy a slim. there's always somewhere selling them for under £200 and no doubt I could get £40 for the old one. That's not much more than getting a fat refurb.

I only use it as a media centre and a blu-ray player - don't really have any spare cash for any sort of upgrade which is why I asked about the DIY fixes...

There are a few DIY fixes most will bring it back for a while, some will last a lot longer. Have a search in these threads there is a few guides its pretty simple TBH just take your time and dont rush it.

Same happened to me, I ended up getting a third party console place to repair it for me for £40. It only lasted another 2 months after that (So I bought a Slim) but was worth it just to back up my save files.
