Just a quick question....

Can the PS3 play/stream videos and music off my computer on the network ??? as if it can't i'm not gonna bother getting one....

sweeeeeeeeeeeet

looks like it's gonna be an expensive Christmas for me then.

Theres a number of ways of doing it too, Windows Media Player, TVersity, Nero, Winamp and plenty of other app's work fine with the PS3.

Check the sticky at the top of the forums, think it explains it in more detail there.

I should also point out you can also do this on the xbox360 as far as I am aware.

Theres also a sneaky rumour that xvid and divx support is heading the ps3's way, but who knows.

Source - Link contains a little swearie!

Transcoding works just fine (providing you have a recent PC)

I have a [email protected] and it streams a DIVX file fine using TVersity, alternatively you can convert and download the file to the PS3 in a supported format and that gives you the option of fast forwarding and watching instantly, the disadvantage is that you need to convert and download it forst and that a 350MB avi is converted to a 1000MB mpg

TVersity is the best IMO, and you don't need a beast of a PC. I run it on my AMD 64 3400+ machine and it runs ok. Though i don't transcode a lot of hi res HD stuff, but if i am just watching TV shows and the like, it is fine.
