PS3s - model improvements?

hey

i was just wondering, are all (for example) 40gig PS3s the same? or does the model mature and improve over time?

it really is out of pure curiosity... do they only make hardware changes when a new model (80gig for e.g.) is released? other than that all the changes are software updates yeah?

IIRC the 40gig chips are made on a different manufacturing process compared to the 60gig and above so they run cooler and in turn generally quieter. There were some teething problems with the blu-ray diodes on the 40gigs however it seems that problem has passed.

oh so they do do the odd bug fix where necessary... how do you find out when your ps3 was built?
