I was getting worried about my investment into Sony products until I read about this extra core being unlocked. I will sleep well tonight.

It apparently doesn't need either of those things, if the sales figures are anything to go by. A bit of extra power available for developers is a nice thing nonetheless.

Could this technically leave them open to a lawsuit ? Its almost like buy a v8 car and finding out you only have v6 working but a software update gives you more ... I'd be fuming as a car owner if I found that out a few years down the line.

Nooooo, because unlike cars, with consoles they kinda learn as they go along. They learn to streamline coding, learn to squeeze every last ounce of power out of it.

It's more like getting faster and faster round a race track, you learn to shave another second off the lap by taking the corner better.

But that extra core was never available from the beginning, your analogy is flawed.

no

the proper analogy would be if you bought a car which had 140bhp.

they then brought out another ECU which boosted it to 150bhp 2 years later would you be mad?

no because you can install that ECU yourself should you wish to do so.

the original R53 Mini One could be chipped this way into a R53 Mini Cooper, a simple ECU swap and you now had the same engine/power as the several thousands of pounds more expensive version.

i don't think many got mad about that either, the smart people bought a mini one instead and chipped it, others couldn't care less.
