Not sure when this became possible, but you can now use Plex to stream movies to your ps4 as the playstation store has a free app called media player and it allows you to stream your movies.

I have setup a Plex server and there are zero issues with it. at first i thought it a little stutter, but that was because plex was indexing about 8TB of movie files, once that was finished it was silky smooth. Watch 4 movies over the weekend all 100% perfect.

Is Plex worth the money each month? I've thought about it several times and never commited to trying it out.

Guess it depends on how many movies/tv series you have stored on the network and stream, I used to use it loads, then it became unreliable on my TV and would show my library but would refuse to play so i stopped.

I find it easier to download and then use the Play to function on my laptop, as i only ever watch something once, and then it just stays wasting space.

I use plex on my ps4 but I just use Internet Explorer to connect to the server and that saves me from paying for the plex pass :)

I am the subscription to Plex because I think it's well worth the money. Remember it will handle all your devices.

I am streaming from an Unraid server to my xbox one, PS3, Asus memo pad, Ipad air and my windows phone when I am out and about.

Have to agree with the OP, once you get it setup and running it's works perfectly. You can select your audio stream and your subtitles. It finds all the cover art itself or you can download your own. The interface is really nice and it's very simple to use.

LOL, sorry, I sound like I am salesman. It's just really that good, and I am going to purchase a lifetime subscription when my current subscription runs out.

I'm so glad I have a smart TV and don't need to faff around with this stuff.

Always thought that spending extra on a Smart TV was sensible. But having seen services pulled from my 2013 Samsung F series or YouTube apps pulled from Sony's that are only a few years old I'm not so sure now. Thinking its better to get the far cheaper non-smart version and then arm it with your set top box of choice.

On topic - love Plex and a life time subscriber for 18months or so.
