Ps4 audio issues

Hi all,

I've tried searching to find an answer to my problem but can't seem to find one.

I've had my PS4 since launch hooked up to my Yamaha v673 receiver via HDMI.

PS4 audio settings set to HDMI output and LPCM. The problem I have relates to stereo output. When playing a big name game I get audio which seems correctly mixed from all 5 of my speakers I also get dts-ma when playing blurays.

When I go to play a game such as walking dead, transistor or the sky app all of which only have stereo sound they come through 2 channels as expected when listening to the speakers but rather then outputting it as 2 channel PCM the PS4 is still outputting it as 5 channel PCM but not playing the centre and rear speakers. The problem with this is because my receiver thinks it's receiving 5.1 PCM it won't allow me to use Dolby pro logic or anything similar.... Has anybody got stereo to output just as stereo then auto switch to 5.1 when it's available? The voices on the sky app are so low when just coming from 2 speakers the centre channel pro logic mix would really help here!

Appreciate any help?

I don't have any issues with bluray movies these have independent settings and bitstream works fine and it comes up as dts-ma.

On games and apps is where the issue lies and the settings available are:

audio priority

Hdmi PCM
Hdmi dolby
Hdmi dts

Or

Optical pcm
Optical dolby
Optical dts

All of the 3 Hdmi settings have the same outcome my receiver is constantly stuck receiving 5 channel audio 5 speakers are lit on the front of the receiver even on stereo content and therefore I can't switch to dolby pro logic as my receiver thinks it's getting the 5.1 but only get sound from 2 speakers. The only thing that changes is it will now say dolby/dts Or pcm on the receiver but other then that the behaviour is the same.

When I change to any of the optical settings it just outputs stereo on everything...

So far I have been switching to the optical settings to use Dolby Pl and then back to Hdmi when 5.1 content is available as you can imagine changing this setting several times a night is less then ideal and frustrating as I've never had any issues with any other equipment including ps3.

I'm trying to get to the bottom of if it's the Ps4 settings that need patching or if it's something in my setup causing the issue?

Anybody using a ps4 with similar issues? Anymore suggestions?

Console sound on the PS4 (and XBox One) is quite hit and miss with games. People have mentioned to me about there even being audio changes within the game from the loading video to actual game play.

PCM is the way to go for uncompressed audio. It's useful to remember though that the console "sees" the properties of the TV/display as well as the surround system because of the HDCP handshake. Have a look in the receiver menus. Is HDMI Control set to ON? If so, switch that off. Do the same for the TV. Also look at the amp menus whether it is set to handle audio as "Amp+TV", and if so, set it to Amp (only). You might also need to play around with the order in which devices power up. Try the console first, then the rest of the AV chain.

danyulland: I am having EXACTLY the same problem, did you ever resolve it?

I've got an Onkyo 5.1 Amp and, when playing games and Blu-rays, the sound is excellent (I have the PS4 set to HDMI PCM). However, when watching YouTube, iPlayer or All4, the PS4 is still sending stereo audio as 5.1 output, instead of letting my amp auto-switch to MY preferred DST mode (Dolby PL II, etc.).

Thanks to your workaround (temporarily switching PS4 to Optical), I can force it to output Stereo/2.1 when I'm using these apps. Doing this is a TOTAL PAIN, but better than the Stereo output sounding all echo-y, with quiet dialog (as it's not using my centre speaker).

Really wish Sony would sort this, as surely

Hello,

Sadly not, I spent quite a while messing with settings on the PS4/amp/tv at the time but could not seem to get it to work correctly and gave up in the end.

I just have to use the workaround when using sky player etc. Luckily it's not too much of a pain because I don't use these apps all that much but it's still far from ideal!

What baffled me at the time is that on everything else I've ever owned it works perfectly fine, also the fact I couldn't really find others having the same issue led me to believe it was some quirk with my receiver or something!

If you find anything more I'd be great-full of the information.

I had the exact same problem and managed to work it out on my own - interestingly though I see Lucid's come across the same thing because what worked for me he's listed...

Check that the AV Receiver isn't in "Amp+TV" mode. Needs to be "Amp" only.

I'm pretty sure i had a play around with this at the time but ill check this tomorrow on my day off and report back.

EDIT:

The only thing i didn't try looking back at Lucids comments are changing the order i switch things on. I use a harmony and then turn the Playstation on manually. Im going to have another fiddle and will report back if i have any sucess.

Thanks

Same here...

I face this issue also and its getting rather annoying.

Current setup:
PS4 -> Sony AV Receiver (STR DN1040) <- (ARC) Sony Bravia 50w705

If I use BBC iPlayer or Sky Go (also some indie games) my AV receiver gets a 5.1 single from the PS4 but with only the front L and R speakers playing the audio. I can force an actual stereo (and therefore pro logic) output by choosing digital optical as the priority with all options unticked aside from PCM but this means no actual 5.1 for films or games, I am required to switch back to HDMI as a priority to achieve 5.1 once more.

I've tried an actual optical cable also rather than HDMI, setting Bitstream and LPCM as the priority, but nothing works. Its manually switch depending on application or lose 5.1/receive only stereo output.
