Hey guys,

Anyone here had any experience with those PS4 (Regular,Non pro/Slim) Cooling fans that go on the rear with 4 or 5 fans that use USB?

Do they actually help at all,I have my PS4 in a cabinet with the rear is covered other than a hole at the top for cables to go through but i do leave the door open while its in use and the PS4 is raised by some foam 3 inch foam ive put as feet to get airflow underneath the console. :)

Does the cabinet have a back? If so can you cut some holes out and fit some fans or just remove it? I just cut some holes out with a 80mm hole saw and fitted a couple of old 80mm fans and it made a huge difference. I did have to remove the back off my other unit as my amp would stick out otherwise.

Hope that helps.

Hi,
Yeah the cabinet does have a back yes i did think about removing it but the other thing that put me off was more dust because obviously dust gets down the back and it would go straight into the draws and cupboards,Cutting out 80/120mm does seem a good option,i see you can buy 120mm fan with USB plus so i could plug 2 straight into the PS4.

Don't bother with the cooling fan add-ons, they won't do anything. If it's an older console the heatsink will likely be clogged with dust so taking it somewhat apart and clearing the dust out will help noise/heat a lot. Failing that, a can of compressed air carefully aimed into the vents on the back and sides will at least do something.

I was wondering about this as well. I have the first gen PS4 and anything more demanding than Fifa causes my fans to go into overdrive due to excess heat. Looks as though the only way is to either gamble and take it apart and clean out the dust, or buy a new PS4.:(

Getting rid of the heat will help more than these fans. A well ventilated unit is best an enclosed unit will cause it to get far too hot as the hot air will be sucked back in by the console. No amount of fans will help with this.

I used a hole cutter to cut 4 big holes in my unit behind both my PS4 and Xbox and it makes a huge difference as the hot air can escape.

It's worth taking apart and replacing the thermal paste as well, as that made a huge difference to my original model.

If it’s in a cabinet then I would fit an exhaust fan Or two to the cabinet to remove excess heat that may be building up inside. Simple hole saw will do. Any good quality pc fan will be fine. Just cut down and solder to a spare usb power cable.

The usb fans you get are usually cheap and noisy and adapters are quite expensive.

I’m planning to do the same when I get a cabinet for all my consoles shortly.

Thermal paste is a very simple job on the PS4 and well worth doing by the looks of it.

Yip i would agree. I just done mine a few weeks ago replaced the thermal pad/paste with some mx4 and its made a difference to mine compared to just cleaning dust/fluff etc from it. Cant remember which video i watched but i think someone posted it in the PS4 thread - it was a one of the launch ps4, mine wasn't a launch ps4 and has a few screws more holding bits in place etc.

I havnt used compressed air from a can but I can recommend using one of those tyre pumps that you plug into a car lighter. The dust that come out of mine was insane the first time I used it. I do it regularly now.

I have been tempted to strip the PS4 down though just to give it a more thorough clean as my fan can still get very loud. From watching a few videos it looks easier to strip it down from underneath, take out the power supply and clean the heat sink and fan that way.
