I'm a little confused here and I'm hoping somebody can help explain this to me, I have both a PS4 and an XB1 and it was my understanding that audio would come through optical cable headsets just fine but you wouldn't be able to use the microphone unless you had a PS4 chat cable (think it's just a 3.5mm cable?) and an audio adapter which isn't out yet for XB1. Audio is fine on both systems, the mic didn't work on XB1 as I expected.

On PS4 however I tried my mic for the first time last night and it's somehow working? This is without the chat cable. On every setup video I've seen even for the PX4 which was specifically designed for PS4 it tells you on the instructions to plug in the chat cable. Yet my mic works without it.

I use a Sharkoon X-Tatic SR/S7, it's sound control unit connects to the system via optical cable and USB. It's a wired headset, I'm obviously really happy about this I'm just hoping somebody can explain why the microphone is working cause it's puzzling me at the moment.
