Do these exist without a monthly fee?

I've got ESO which is about as fun as pulling teeth. I played the living hell out of WoW and want something similar-ish on the PS4, so with quests and stuff and the ability to team up. I've done Destiny to death and am looking for something new.

FF XIV looks fantastic but as we play as a group, I don't want to split the group in to can affords and can't affords.

Must be an RPG-ish game, so no Planetside or anything.

Any ideas?

Nice to see I'm not the only one in this boat then :D

I might take a gamble on FFXIV and see what it's like. I can make new friends :p

Thanks for the heads up on Never winter :)

It should be downloaded ready for some time tonight. Can't wait to get home and give it a go.

Runs sweet as a nut for me

The odd spike here or there but nothing game breaking. It's a great game, I got to level 11 tonight. The combat is good although the direction you face is governed by moving a joystick all the way around. If you want to turn around 180deg, you can't just move the joystick to the other side, you have to "walk" around. It's no biggie but it is noticeable. It's not open world from what I can tell. I may not have discovered it yet but so far it's not like WoW where you can simply run in to a level much higher than you (anyone who's crossed Elwynn Forest in to Dusk wood will know what I mean), but rather you progress through the areas which go up in level as you do. I would've preferred proper open world but I can't complain.

The controls are well mapped and the game guides you slowly in to learning them but I need to do some research on how to master them. The abilities are great, I'm a tank, a warrior thingy which is cool. No healing abilities but health potions drop from almost everything so it's no problem. There is crafting although I haven't tried it yet. There is also an in-game economy with auction houses and stuff but again I havent ventured in to that yet. Contrary to ESO, there are actually other players all over the world so it feels busy and full of life. I must say the game is very forgiving at these early stages, perhaps a bit too much so. I can take on groups of 6 bad guys all a level above me and just cleave them to death. Pop a health potion afterwards and you're good to go. The quests are standard MMORPG stuff, "collect 5 of these", "kill 10 of those" but it's a familiar feeling and exactly what I wanted.

I'll write up more as I go but for a free to play game my initial impressions are that this is a very solid title.

Got up to level 16 last night, still enjoying it but I do wish it was properly open world rather than loads of instances. This also leads me to my next point which is a drawback for me and will sound absolutely ridiculous, but I miss the "peace" you had in WoW. I used to enjoy just exploring and gathering crafting materials, chilling out and enjoying the open world but here everything is hostile all the time. It's no biggie and if I wanted it that bad I could always go back to WoW but it would've been nice.

I did a few skirmishes which were ok, might hop in to a dungeon tonight but I need to learn how to tank properly as it's very different to what I'm used to. I couldn't hold aggro for bananas last night so that definitely needs to be worked on.

I got bored of it. I don't know what it is abotu the game but something's just not clicking for me. I *think* it's the instancing fact, and that I don't feel my character getting stronger. I got up to level 17 and haven't logged on since. In WoW, I could feel my character getting stronger. I could go in to an area, get my arse handed to me, and come back later on and destroy everything, whereas here everything's of similar level so it's always the same. That and the lack of a proper open world, which is a big thing for me.

Oh and don't even get me started on the PVP, what a load of rubbish. Played a load of games of Domination which are 5v5 and if there are 10 kills in a match it's a lot. It's awful.
