PS4 to PS5 data transfer question

Hi All,

Right now I have both a PS4 and PS5 set up under our main telly, but this feels a bit redundant. I am thinking of buying a large USB SSD (something like the Crucial X8), plugging that into the PS5, and using it to store and play all PS4 games. Any downsides to this plan?

If this is workable, what's the best way of transferring all the data over from my PS4 - not just game data, but save files, screenshots etc. as well. Is this possible? I also don't want to wipe the data from the PS4, as it will just be relocated into a bedroom or something.

Cheers,

Su

It is dead easy to transfer saves and games from ps4 to ps5 over a network, there are several guides on youtube. I used this one but there are a load of them to search for. I did mine before I set up an external drive, so I copied everything to the PS5 ssd first, them moved everything to the external drive afterwards, but I would imagine you can do it direct to the external drive in the first place. I don't think you have to move everything in a oner either, so you can do it in batches if you like, if it turns out you can't go straight to the external drive and you have too much data on your ps4 to do it in one to the PS5 ssd.

Super helpful, thanks mate! I will give this a go with the external and report back if any speed bumps!

I think I'd rather spend slightly more on an M.2 SSD for the PS5 and use that instead.

You can transfer data from the PS4 to PS5 via the network:

This should leave your PS4 data intact too (whereas transferring games to an external drive won't), but you may want to confirm that.

My plan was to use a USB SSD for the PS4 games (since they can be played directly from the external drive), and then add an internal NVME drive for PS5 games only, since the fast storage is more of a premium and the PS5 games are getting pretty huuuuge! Any problems you see with the plan?

Cheers,

Su
