PS4 VR or Oculus Rift?

Hey!

I'm hoping you can help me decide... partner's Christmas present. I am idealess this year; so I'm thinking one of these might be good?

He's recently got a PS4 that he likes; although he's usually a PC gamer. He'd need a new graphics card for the Oculus, though, which would make it pretty expensive...

I've heard the resolution on the PS4 VR is poor; but the Oculus has some rubbish reviews, too. Is the Oculus worth £200 more? There's games that he'd like on both, I think.

If both are rubbish, any other ideas for good Christmas presents? I was going to get him a PS4 Pro, but he bought himself one. We've both already got Xbox Ones; he's got a decent phone; I can't really stretch to a laptop.

Thank you! :)

I've only experienced VR on my phone (Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge with the Gear VR) so I can't comment on specifics, but I feel like the PS4 VR would be a great introduction to VR and it wouldn't be wasted money. I wouldn't personally spend the big bucks on Oculus Rift or HTC Vive and a top of the range graphics card at this stage, as the resolution in general for VR isn't where it needs to be just yet. So basically go for the PS4 VR - have fun with it, and get the big boy VR in a couple of years when the technology has progressed.

There is a VR subforum which would help you ;-)

Go for the PSVR. it's a great start into VR, if he gets really into it he can sell it later down the line and buy a new graphics card to go with occulus/htc vive.

Oculus isn't just the cost of the head set either. If you want to play with motion controllers you will need to shell out for those also. And for full roomscale, extra sensors. You can get a smaller game area with 2 sensors, but 3 will be needed to match Vive size etc. Vive would actually be cheaper but they are so closely matched now I would look into the pluses and minuses and see which suits you better (they both excel slightly in different areas)

PSVR cheapest and probably has the best content list 'at the moment', but it is inferior hardware.

I would be looking at a 4k hdr tv to go with his new PS4 pro, but they are not cheap either hehe

If your partner isn't in to the whole VR hype-train and already has a PS4 then PSVR would be my choice. Yes, the Rift and Vive are better but its content that makes or breaks a system and at the moment the PSVR has some killer games for it (although both Vive and Rift have some excellent titles too).
The Rift and Vive take a fair amount of setup and once you've added a new GPU in to the mix you are well over £1k for either and that's assuming his PC meets the rest of the minimum specs which are pretty high.
I have owned both Vive and Rift (sold Vive, kept Rift) and have spent a fair amount of time with PSVR.

Moved thread to VR section for you.

Thank you! Totally didn't spot that before posting...

Good luck getting a PS VR atm, without paying a fortune on ebay.

I got one on Amazon this morning; delivery on the 16th Dec. I'm just doubting it now that I don't have long to cancel...

Ha that's an excellent idea; but I suspect he'd see it as a present for us both...

Don't forget that to make best use of the PSVR you will also need a PS camera (£40) and the PSMOVE controllers (£70) and a game (£25-50).

I have the camera included; I'd need the game and I'd totally forgotten about controllers. Thanks :)

Thank you all for the replies! I think PS4VR makes most sense if I'm going VR; he can then upgrade his PC and then upgrade his VR if he wants.

His friend has just reminded me that he hates 3D films; they give him headaches. Is VR likely to do the same? I haven't tried it. I want to!

Eurgh presents are hard.

In some ways yes, but it's more comfortable than Rift or Vive for prolonged gaming and has less of a 'screen-door' effect than either of those.

Go for thr PSVR....cheaper, better games etc etc.

Yea, that's really true actually. I completely forgot about comfort and the PSVR is supposed to be much more comfortable.

Screen door is also true, but personally I hardly notice the screen door on my Vive, and when I do, it still doesn't bother me at all. I guess that is subjective though.

I have had the psvr and now own a vive , psvr when done right can look very good. However as with most VR games at the moment its all tech demos. so i gave up on the psvr and invested in the vive as i play more on the pc these days and i wanted to get the vive for elite. As good as a head tracker is for elite the vive takes it to another level. I even got the psvr to run on the pc displaying elite, ok the resolution was a mess but you could see the potential ( and was the reason why i decided to get the vive). If they could sort out the lens on the vive it would be spot on for me. As for the psvr on the pc , if sony could get that working it would make a very interesting option i was surprised how good it was even when it hashed together with a pc. So i guess it boils down to what games he plays and what headset he is likely to use more.

As for comfort , psvr wins for fitting so easy to take on and off , vive just more fiddly than anything else. For long gaming sessions the sony was good however eyes did get tired quick, not the same on the vive. atleast not yet anyway.

If you have the space and want to experience the full potential that room-scale VR had to offer, get the Vive.

If you have limited space and don't mind some tracking quirks and loads of USB cables, get the Rift+Touch.

If cost and comfort is at a premium and you already have a PS4 (and an underpowered PC), get the PSVR bundle. The tracking precision and scale can't compare to the PC offerings, but it may be good enough. Be aware that the content is expensive, so it might not work out cheaper in the long run.

Yeah, but only at 60Hz and with no positional tracking for headset or motion controllers. So, not exactly ideal at all.
Hopefully it will come though.

If i had to choose the oculus (without question) but if you want the best experience then go for the vive. Ive had a cv1, and now got a vive & psvr in my household. TBH i thought the PSVR was ok at first but then going back to the vive then back to the PSVR makes you realise just how basic PSVR is...to the point after initial toying with the PSVR i actually use my gear vr more, my son actually thinks Gear VR is better than PSVR !

The only reason i would ever recommend a PSVR is if you have a PS4 Pro, NO VR Capable PC and low expecations for VR.

There is also much better games on oculus and vive at the moment, that will change as PSVR has a lot planned but itll never stop the fact its a low spec headset !
