PS5 auto updates- useless

So tonight i thought ill leave the PC and Starfield to play something on the big screen. Haven’t played CoD in ages so thought it would be a nice change of pace.

An hour later I’m still waiting for it to install endless god damned updates. And thats after deciding to play some apex (which also involved an update) while I waited.

What exactly is the point of the auto update feature on the PS5 if it doesn’t actually update anything? Utterly useless feature as far as i can fathom.

I checked my settings and it’s set to update in rest mode… am i missing something here?

Was getting annoyed with similar on Xbox, then noticed the small print that says will only keep games played within the last 28 days up to date... perhaps playstation does the same.

As @**Pork Pie** says it only updates recently played games. If you haven't touched a game for a while then it won't update it.

And system updates usually require your input to install them.

Ah maybe that’s it then. Still annoying when you just want to fire up the console for a quick game.

Yeah happens all the time. Unfortunately when you want to spontaneously play an a game you haven’t got ages, you need to plan it! The amount of times I’ve thought I’ll play so and so and fine there’s a 10gb update so just sack it off.

I assume you are leaving it in rest mide and not 'off'

. My old one s never used to update in standby, even on recent games. Was very annoying when I only had a short time to play (young kids) and spent most of the time updating.

Same thing again…. The other half lets me have the big TV… great ill play some cod or apex. I’m now staring at an update screen and have been for 20 damn minutes. Wtf is the point in consoles if you can’t just switch on and go? Christ alive

The bigger issue is you being ‘allowed’ the TV. Get yourself a man cave

Let’s not get ahead of ourselves, i had a few beers last night and the other half tells me i fell asleep on the floor. I’ll be lucky to be allowed on the big tv again :cry:

You could always just leave the thing in rest mode ? It auto updates the most recent played games (5 I think)

It’s always in rest mode but it doesn’t get used regularly so perhaps that’s the issue.

Check the Game/App Settings section too, there are a couple of options there that change whether games auto-update or not.

Just a random thought, your router syays on overnight too right, thats not programed to turn off is it?

No that’s always on. I reckon it’s probably just the fact that the ps5 gets used sporadically. Even though it’s set to auto-update and it’s in rest mode I think it’s not updating because it hasn’t been booted up in a couple of weeks.
