From my reading online it seems that the PS5 now supports 1440p, which it didn't at the time of release. However, does the PS5 support 1440p and 120Hz? I'm asking as I plan on hooking a PS5 to my current 1440p 165hz gaming monitor

Cheers

I believe it does, I have heard you need to turn off 120hz mode in your console settings first, get the PS5 to register 1440p and then turn on 120hz.

Thanks, my monitor is an MSI Optix g273qf and it appears to be on the supported list for the PS5 so hopefully it'll work as it should at 120Hz

Whats the reason the image quality suffers at 120Hz? Is it because its downscaling the res to reach 120fps or am I not understanding correctly
It depends on the game and your monitor. On a HDMI 2.1 TV it looks fine at 4k 120Hz.

Some TV/monitors result in the output being downgraded to 1080p 120hz, which is going to make the picture look worse if your monitor is then having to scale that 1080p back up to whatever the native resolution is. That may happen on your 1440p monitor if it and the PS5 are unable to negotiate 1440p 120hz properly.

Thanks for the explanation. Is their anyway I can know if my monitor will work without issue beforehand? My monitor does only appear to be HDMI 2.0, I think that may be a limiting factor...

Have a look here, this does seem to suggest that it supports it:

Thanks, yeah the 2nd link does seem to suggest it works at 1440p 120hz so should be all good... I think :D

I had a mid tier 2560x1440p monitor 165hz before my current 4k monitor,

there was an update for the PS5 a while back and it now supports 1440p and ghost of Tsushima ran fine 2560x1440 and looked great / crisp as well. I dont know whether it was running at 60hz or 120hz as I put the graphics settings on quality but for someone who is sensitive to refresh rate it felt really smooth and I had the ps5 set at 1440p 120hz. Also played Tony hawk skateboarding on it which looked really good.

I am currently using a 32 inch 4k screen at 120hz (its the Samsung odyssey Neo G8) and the ps5 can handle Tsushima on this monitor just fine and looks great, when playing MW3 in 120hz you can tell the graphics quality drops, it depends on the game I think though but Tsushima still feels like its running above 60hz
