Child Trust Funds - if you didn't start one for your child born between 1 September 2002 and 2 January 2011 then the government opened an account on their behalf.
Average account balance is £2,000 and apparently around £400 Million is sitting unclaimed.

If you have no idea whether you did or did not open an account (the government will have if you didn't), then you can request HMRC to find the account for you.

I'll provide my PayPal details for anyone that finds their £1000's prompted by this thread. :)

Saw this and got all excited but presumably as my son was born on the 19th of January 2011 he won't have one as the scheme ended on the 2nd of January. Correct?

We did this for both of ours. Paid in a bit every month and my eldest's was worth about £8k at maturity, Not a bad start in life and a lot more than I ever saw at that age. Only downside is that the younger daughter's one hasn't perfroemd quite as well so I'm having to top it up!
