So this evening my wife tells me that there is a smoke kind of smell coming out of the study where my rig is setup.

Upon closer investigation I determined the smell was infact coming out of the Seasonic 860W 80+ Platinum PSU in my rig.

Now my rig houses an i7 4770k with a couple of 280x. No silly overclocking or anything like that...

So under the assumption that my PSU was on the blinkers, I then proceeded to remove the cables attached to the PSU sockets, when I encountered this...

This is one of cables that goes to the PCI-E socket on one of the 280x.

I have never seen anything like this before in using PCs and building them. Has anyone had similar experience?

(Naturally I have requested RMA to OCUK).

Many thanks!

Thanks folks. It makes feel better in one way, but in another way, a little concerned that it was my wife who caught wind of it and not me!
Whats the worst that could have happened? Surely it should've tripped a fuse?

I mean what could have caused it?

I will fess up and say I have been using this rig for some mining but not continously...

Could it be due to that or simply a field failure?

the bottom left 3 pins are 12v, possibly one or two of these were not making proper contact so your gpu was pulling more than intended from the 12v pin which was connecting properly. The other reason could be you were using a splitter to connect one pci-e power connector to 2 connectors on the gpu. Maybe check both ends of the cable to see if any of the metal contacts inside have been pushed out.

I thought this and checked but all connectors looked like they were protruding ok to make contact. But good thinking though!

Looks like cables or pins have touched and shorted out somewhere - however it is certainly bad luck. Hope it has not damaged anything else. Sure overclockers will sort it out though.

No everything else seems fine to me! I just replaced it with another PSU I have....
Could it have caused damage to the GPUs? anyway to test them?
Perhaps run through a few cycles of Heaven or 3dmark?
