hi guys i cant seem to stop my ps3 reverting to 50hz while playing DVD's on the machine. it starts up the ps3 in 60hz but then when playback starts goes to 50hz which is a bit annoying as i can notice the difference especially having recently changed from a 100hz CRT.

any help appreciated. games play in 60hz no problem

I presume you are playing PAL DVDs in which case they are 50hz and there would be no way to change that. It's nothing to do with the PS3 or your TV.

If you're playing PAL DVD's you want it to output 50hz. Likewise if you're playing NTSC DVD's you want 60hz output. Otherwise it means it's doing PAL-NTSC or NTSC-PAL conversion, which is bad.

As above, its normal. Your 100hz tele would have played back at 50hz too, it just wouldn't have told you, i guess in this case ignorance is bliss.

but i notice framerate changes when the picture displayed changes from still to moving... a bit like the scene is being speeded up. hard to explain but dvd playback seemed smoother on the CRT. i dont notice it with games or blueray so i thought the frequency was the culprit..?! any other suggestions on what i am noticing as being different?

thanks

I don't know about PS3 but for DVD Players you can set the video output, best to set to auto so no conversion is happening. Is the PS3 the same?

No DVD player or the PS3 will output a PAL DVD in anything other than 50hz.

BEEP! Wrong. From my DVD player manual "PAL and NTSC compatible with system conversion" If I set to NTSC output, and input a PAL disc the TV reports 60hz. And likewse if I set PAL output, put in a NTSC disc- TV displays 50hz.

Although it's left to auto for obvious reasons.
