PSN account compromised

Hi all,

I had an email this morning telling me I had added funds to my wallet via the PayPal billing agreement on my PSN account. The email address was then changed.

If you haven't already I would recommend activating 2FA on your PSN account. I think they got my password from one of the recent leaks as I don't use my password manager for everything (only the important accounts, oops!).

Now to sit on support lines waiting for Sony to sort it...

Not sure if it's the same issue, but my brother discovered his PSN was also compromised and £80 had been spent. He can't get in, because his password is changed. Also waiting on Sony.

The funny thing is, my brother hadn't made a PSN account till the other day. Turns out the reason he couldn't was because some Dutch person had used his email to make a PSN account somehow and there was no way for him to get his email back for him to make an account with (though surely he must have seen the confirmation emails and stuff, how on earth did his email get used is another thing entirely). So he ended up making a Gmail account so he could make a PSN.

Anyhow, thanks for this reminder, I've set up 2-step verification immediately. Steam has the best one IMO, where it triggers (and asks for verification) upon recognising that one is trying to sign in from a different PC/device/IP address.

Steam, PSN, Uplay all offer 2FA now, everyone should be getting it setup.

My Origin account was hacked ages ago and I haven't got around to sorting it out :/

I just enabled it last night on my account it takes less than 5 minutes to do, now i just wish netflix used it as my account got hacked and their security is so lax/useless.

That sucks but seeing yet another one of these threads has made me activate my 2step activation, I hope Sony sort it as I heard there service to fox these issues is pretty poor

Cheers. They were great to be fair. Bloke in their UK call centre sorted it within 15 minutes. Waiting on their accounts team to refund me though. There is a bit of a process on that side.

Just an FYI. I've had this with my PSN account before. If any money has been spent using your bank or credit card and you get it back via a fraud claim, Sony will not unlock your account until you pay them back.

Absolutely ridiculous, someone bought digital games using my account details, Sony wouldn't even remove them from my account, they just expected me to pay for them. I ended up making a new PSN account rather than pay them £140 for games I did not buy myself.

Edit: Sounds like you are having a bit of a better time than I did at least!

Happened to me before, I got the transactions refunded within about a day and everything was sorted within 2. Really good response time.
