Anything you buy on the PSN from November 18th will only be able to be accessed from 2 active PS3s and 2 active portables. Currently you can have content active on 5 PS3s and 5 PSPs.

Also Sony are finally introducing an online management system whereby you can remotely deactivate a home/portable console. This is handy if you bought a new one if a previous one died/was lost/stolen/sold and you were unable to deactivate the system.

Gamesharing was a system Sony introduced with the PS3 where your PSN content could be played on 5 activated systems. It was intended to be used for people with multiple consoles in one home (family with children for example) but has ended up being used by a bunch of people to group together to buy one game which is not popular with developers and publishers.

One of the PixelJunk Shooter devs mentioned that there are 20% more people on the online scoreboard than bought the game. Some of that would have been accounted for from people playing the game on one console with different accounts but not all of it.

ANYTHING YOU BOUGHT BEFORE 18th NOVEMBER WILL STILL WORK ON 5 CONSOLES.

When the PS Vita arrives it will be included in the "portable" allowance.

So if you buy a PS1 game on the PSN you'll be able to have it on 2 PS3s AND 2 portable devices. So 4 in total.

We’d like to inform you of some upcoming changes to the usage policies for PlayStation Network game content. As of November 18, 2011, the number of devices that can be activated on one PlayStation Network account for game content purchased from the PlayStation Store will be updated as follows:
For game content purchased after November 18, 2011, a new policy will apply and the number of devices that can be activated will be as follows:
PS3: Users will be able to play the game on up to 2 activated PS3 systems.
PSP: Users will be able to play the game on up to 2 activated PSP systems.
Please note that this update will not affect game content purchased before November 18. The PSP rights include PSP-1000/2000/3000 series as well as the PSPgo system.
PlayStation Network users are able to change the activation setting through each device, and Sony Computer Entertainment plans to provide a new PlayStation Network account management website where users will be able to deactivate particular devices attached to their PlayStation Network account via their PC.

To be fair, like most of the rather relaxed policies Sony originally had on the PS3, this was abused heavily. Even on here people would often just share out their 5 downloads rather than using them as they were meant to be, often i'm sure resulting in rather substantial lost revenue. I also imagine Sony are under pressure from 3rd party developers who want the maximum return from their productions.

At least we can still activate/deactivate systems so we'll never 'run out' if our PS3 blows up etc.

I suppose its annoying to have a service reduced like this, but to be honest, I can't imagine somebody having more than two PS3s or two portables in one house. I didn't even know about this, and I never buy anything on PSN or XBLA expecting to be able to use it on another console.

I hate to say it, but it seems pretty reasonable to me. :o

i have 3 ps3s and sometimes there on at the same time looks like im either never buying from the psn store again or i will have to take my ps3 discs around with me. news like this makes me wonder why i stuck with the ps3 after all the linux bull****

I have 2 PS3's in my house but as long as we can deactivate a system easily then that's fine.
I've used the system to exchange with a friend as we both went through a period of buying a LOT of stuff from the store then decided we should add each others accounts to see what we had that the other might fancy trying.

So I can understand why they are limiting this to be honest. I was always surprised it was as high as 5 anyway.

You're right, They should carry on letting people abuse the system.

"Linux is allowing people to explore the PS3's inner workings, and circumvent protection!!"

"Ohwell, Leave them to it"

"People are downloading 5 copies of each game and sharing them amongst their friends!! We're losing money!!"

"Ohwell, Leave them to it"
