Hi

I've downloaded a guitar hero track pack already and wish to download more psn games.

I was wondering what would happen to the games when you ugprade the hdd etc?

Can I simply just download them for free again (upto 5 times) when I sign into my PSN account and go to the store?

sid

Yep as far as I know, you get 5 chances before you have to repurchase them.

Yeah thats pretty obvious I just wanted to know the semantics of how exactly it works after say a format or a new hdd installation. (Assuming it wasn't backed up)

Oh I see, I found this in the PS3 sticky, should answer your question I hope.

Q. Do I have to re purchase something if I delete it or format my drive?
A. Sony operates a policy of the same user can download protected content such as a game, 5 times before you have to repurchase. When you purchase items from the PSN store the corresponding link on the store is removed, this is to stop you downloading the same thing again by mistake. To download it again log on to the user who downloaded the item (if using different PSN stores) then access the PS Store, if you look in the Download list all the items you have downloaded excluding videos will be there. This includes free demos and games, full games, DLC for games, PS1 titles etc, just select download and it will start.

When you do a full backup and restore of your PS3 HDD when upgrading, all the games, saves etc are all copied to the backup drive reading for a restore. So when you fit your new drive when you restore it you should have all the PSN games you previously downloaded.

Why can you only download it 5 times? Admittedly, there shouldn't really be need to do so but that takes the micky.

iirc you can deactivate your account in the xmb and then reactivate it on the new hdd

leaving you with 5 download slots still

Because you can set up the account on a mate's PS3 and download it to their system. Having a cap on how many times you can do it stops people from taking the ****.

Well I'm getting dangerously close..

I have two ps3's both have now been upgraded to larger HD's so I've essentially downloaded my purchased Tekken 4 times... I can't see myself ever buying another PS3, but if one fails then my limit is up..

I'm sure a call to Sony would resolve it though.

If you upgrade a HDD YOU DO NOT LOSE A LICENSE.

The license is held in the ROM the PS3 holds the OS in. I know this for a fact as my 5 licenses are all in use and I upgraded my HDD and had no issues.

It is 5 unique machines that can download each game. There is no download limit you and the 4 other ps3s your account maybe on can download the files as many times individually as they want.

Sweet didn't know that !

so if i buy warhawk for example onto my ps3 is it locked to the account that buys it or can any account on machine use it?

Warhawk and GT5: P are exceptions to the rule. They only work from the account you bought them, so if someone wanted to share, they couldn't as they would log your ID out.

Basically more complicated than that but I have to go home now!!

So if i wanted to 'borrow' some of my mates psn games, would i still need to log onto his account on my ps3 after ive downloaded them to play them? Or could i just delete his account afterwards? Coz i'd want to use my account for mates n that,

No you wouldn't need to log into his account to play the games, they would work fine from any of the accounts on the PS3 system (except Warhawk which requires you to be logged into the account which purchased it).

You DO however have to leave the account which the games belong to on the system - if you delete the account you loose the right to play the content on any of the other PS3 accounts on that system.

Further to this, you can then change the password so the account cannot be used by the other person, but still lets them play your games as the account still exists on the machine. They only need to login to your account to kick off the downloads (that is when "activation" is done/checked for 5 machines) after this you can log back into your account and the download still continues in your "Download Management" section.

I think that and the other comments in this thread cover everything.
