Sources are everywhere so I wont bother linking.

But yesterday both MS and Sony announced they have 17 million users on there network.

In this 17 million MS are also counting silver (free) accounts.

So I'm a little stumped as to how Sony have managed to get 17 million accounts. I'm not suggesting they are lying. I just cant comprehend it. I suppose I need a survey or something lol.

Anyone else find this is little surprising?

I don't find it surprising at all. I know people who use their 360's on a portable TV in their 6 year old kids bedroom. You will not find a PS3 in places like that.
That doesn't really add to PS3 accounts though

Im led to belive that the 17 million Live accounts are for gold only
That's not what was said yesterday when watching the live CES keynote. The "majority" are gold.

Katoom, it's PSN network accounts. Same on all platforms isn't it?

If you take into account those free trials (which unless I am mistaken all create a new account and cannot be added to existing gamertags), I doubt it.

Wrong. 48 hour, 1 month trials can be added on to a normal silver gamertag.

Although no-one knows to be honest. I suspect those that create multiple accounts on either system are the hardcore/small minority. The figures are more likely to be skewed by xbox 1 accounts, PSP accounts, Windows Xbox Live accounts etc, much more imo.

A PSN account is a PSN account (PSP, PS3). Just as a Live subscription is. (PC, 360) Both can be created on a pc and used on 2 systems.

Xbox Live and Games for Windows Live are 2 different things.

Not sure on that. The subscription is the same. A gold Live account on the Xbox is a gold account on PC. I don't need to pay another £40. So I would assume the same for silver accounts on Games for Windows Live.
