PSN has 17 millilion users, same as XBL

PSN on the PS3 is their starting ground, i wouldn't be surprised if they started charging for a better PSN on the PS4 after they've learnt from there mistakes with this one and have a much better service.

Hmm...Sony has only sold 18 million PS3s worldwide, I bet theres a lot more than 1 million of them not online! Porkies tbh. Though I know more people that dont have Live than do as tbh its a ripoff. All it offers over PSN that is of use is cross-game chat and no. of headset users. Large quantities of salt is needed when companies release thier own figures.

Thing is, with the PS3, ~80% of those online are probably from east asia whilst for those with XBL gold, ~80% are from USA/Europe so it seems a lot higher to us as it relates more.

17 million silent people on my PS3 - just great.
I wish they had just built a decent online community system and built headsets to give out in the first place.. I am really starting to love my PS3, I just wish it matched the 360 for MP games. Anything I want a single playr experience with i buy for my PS3. If there is an online element the 360 wins eveytime.

Europe is much bigger for Sony than it is for MS (certainly historically, and I believe its still true of this generation)

You are correct about USA being heavily MS though without a doubt, and the same regarding Asia and Sony :)

Going deeper down the fox hole (yes, it's called a mixed metaphor), Infinity Ward checked specific data on certain levels:

* 71.1%, or 7,111,508 people have completed F.N.G.
* 68.8%, or 6,886,509 people have completed Cargo Ship.
* 46.5%, or 5,654,643 people have beaten the game on any difficulty.
* 2.8%, or 283,632 people have completed Airplane on Veteran difficulty.

So, according to the first stat quoted above, almost a third of COD4 owners bought it for online play only... or were too pants to even beat the first level in Easy :D

Sources are everywhere so I wont bother linking.

But yesterday both MS and Sony announced they have 17 million users on there network.

In this 17 million MS are also counting silver (free) accounts.

So I'm a little stumped as to how Sony have managed to get 17 million accounts. I'm not suggesting they are lying. I just cant comprehend it. I suppose I need a survey or something lol.

Anyone else find this is little surprising?

Probably incorrect. The PS3 has only sold 19 million, I very much doubt that 90% of PS3 users play online.

That's what I was just thinking.

I would bet more PS3 players have multiple region accounts than xbox users. My mate has 3 for example and has only had a PS3 6 months, I've had a 360 since launch and only ever had the one. This is probably because Sony are far crapper than Microsoft at treating each region fairly, stuff takes ages to come to Europe on PS3.

But in turn a hell of a lot of PC owners have Live accounts, this being because the PC releases of GTAIV and Gears of War forced people to create a live account even if they played offline.

Both figures are probably well off the 'true' number of people that use the service as intended.

As I recall when 360 was first released here, every man and their dog on this forum had a USA, Japan and EU account (no doubt most will deny it now :) ). It is just as likely that ppl create free Silver accounts on xbox live for regioned content as on PSN. i.e.people had USA accounts to get hold of video content etc.

Also bear in mind a lot of PSPs have been sold and a lot of people have PSN accounts for that, I am sure loads of people own a PSP who don't own a PS3 etc. Which surely must add at least a couple of million to the figure?

Also bear in mind that multiple people in a family with a PS3 have multiple accounts. Due to the cost on 360, I suspect less people do this and just play online on 1 gold subscription to save money.

Plus ultimately no-one knows how these stats are counted. For example I know a lot of people create free Silver accounts on 360 (upto 5 are allowed per console) to get free month trials of gold. I know people use those free cards to create brand new IDs for 48 hours play.

It's all just manipulated stats tbh, it does amuse me how the 360 fans claim the PS stats are fiddled when no-one here even knows how these stats are acquired!

Most of the 360 fans in this thread are the usual trolls so do not use logic like this :) Take this for 3example :
Just shows you how clever MS are, the amount of money they have made from Xbox Live compared to the amount of money Sony have lost/losing from offering free PSN.
I bet if Sony had half the users he would say PSN sucks, if it has the same or more users he would say SOny are stupid to male it free.

We call this a no win situation :)

I have made 10 PSN accounts myself lol, i'd imagine a lot of Ps3 owners have made more multiple accounts in camparison to xbox.

If you take into account those free trials (which unless I am mistaken all create a new account and cannot be added to existing gamertags), I doubt it.

Although no-one knows to be honest. I suspect those that create multiple accounts on either system are the hardcore/small minority. The figures are more likely to be skewed by xbox 1 accounts, PSP accounts, Windows Xbox Live accounts etc, much more imo.

Whilst I don't think that the figures quoted in the OP are in anyway accurate or quantifiable, I do think that it stands to reason that a higher percentage of PS3 owners will be online than 360 owners.

With the PS3's much higher price they will usually be bought by people with more expendable income and thus they are more likely to have broadband etc. There will be plenty of households on a budget (especially recently) who can't justify the cost of broadband and would go for the cheaper option when it comes to the latest consoles.
