as of now (12/07/14) regardless of what console/s you own
if you had to choose a service for online gaming which one would you choose?

during the previous generation, xbox live and call of duty put me off multiplayer
games for life.

do games on each service for the new gen consoles use dedicated servers or still the rubbish P2P?

i remember quake 1(PC) on 56k dial up back in 1996 and it was amazing online but things seem to have gotten worse these days..

as i want to get back into online gaming this decision will help me to decide
to go PS4 or XboxOne.

PS: i can live without exclusives.

Apparently the xbox one uses the power of the cloud for online games but I'm not sure if this includes every game. I know COD: Ghosts uses the cloud/dedicated servers. I think I also read that the PS4 will be using the cloud for servers at some point? This may not be 100% fact though :o

We don't really have enough MP games out on the current gen to comment tbh. The main 2 games are COD and BF4 at the minute with the latter having some serious issues with their servers. The little time I have spent on Ghosts it felt relatively smooth and I didn't have any real gripes with the connections.

Its likely to be very similar to last generation Id expect - too early to say. P2P isnt going anywhere, its a 'cheap' way to get MP working for devs/pubs.

ps3ud0

MS offer every developer free use of dedicated servers IIRC so I imagine most games will take use of them on the One.

Ps+ currently has a better free download section

I know xbox games eg titanfall have dedicated servers and a (poorer) selection of free downloads...

Worth giving them a while. Tbh I'd go with which has the games/controller you prefer as not much in it.

Get xbox one in my experience psn is full of laggy southern europeans and laggy chav kids on shared wireless ps4 is their new console of choice.

The xbox one owner is more likely to use an ethernet cable and care more about lag free gaming.

Having been an Xbox subscriber last gen I'm swaying towards PSN+ due to the fact that they seem to get better freebies than Xbox.

Xbox live every time.
The question is about online gaming, not better value for money.

PSN is so frequently down for maintenance it is unbelievable. Xbox Live is very rarely down.

As an online gaming service, PSN is still far behind Xbox Live.

Yes, I would go with Xbox Live. I have more faith in Microsoft to acknowledge when the service has a problem - they even have a dedicated status page on the website. Sony seem to take PSN down for maintenance more than a French lady's undergarments.

Eventually, once the games library expands, PS+ will be serving up retail games for free. Expect Knack will most likely be the first.

Judging on the Xbox 360 offerings the same will be true with Xbox Live in time.

I'd go for Xbox live for online gaming but that is based on very little actual experience of PSN multiplayer.

Funnily enough when trying to make a decision on what console to buy this generation it was so close it came down to the controller and what suited my spindly fingers better :o

Whether a game uses dedicated servers is solely down to the publisher.
Yes MS offer their cloud service but if publishers don't want to pay then you'll still be stuck on P2P.
While there isn't much difference between the 2 when playing a game, PSN does seem to be down a LOT for maintenance at the moment. Sony need to sort it out as it's always us Europeans that suffer the most.

I use an ethernet cable and I use PSN.

I'd pick Xbox Live. The cloud features are there, but developers don't always choose to use them, and the service is pretty much always available.

If you go onto the Network settings on the Xbox one, it will state if there are any services that are currently unavailable or aren't running as well as they should.

edit: My Xbone is wireless. Will I get shot for playing it on a 5Ghz .ac network?

If pick whatever console your friends play on tbh.

The online service is pretty much the same, except Sony has quite frequent maintenance down time.

The PSN free game offering has been awesome, Microsoft need to up their game.

Having had both the PS3/PS4 and XBox 360 while also being a massive Sony fan boy i'd say Live hands down for gaming. It's hardly ever down, had better usability and group usage but it lacks the quality of free games that PSN+ gives and that's the only downside.

Console wise though i ditched my 360 once PS3 games library improved and am super happy with my PS4.
