Got son a Japanese 1.5 psp. All going well. He got a new game today (sims 2) and it says to play this you must update software. If he does this he will loose 1.5 firmware won't he?
Please advise.

You will have to update to play. That is the only advice you will get here that doesn't break the rules of the forum.

I dont have a PSP so wouldnt know but...

Whats so bad about updating from 1.5? I thought the firmware was at 3.x something now?

3.X what ever is somewhat more limiting than 1.5 ;)

Piracy and homebrew software, which as I have already said, discussing is against the rules.

Is is the game bought in this country? If so it will come with the UK firmware and if you install that on your JAP PSP it will bugger it up i think. You have to go on the net and download the latest JAP version iirc.

It used to be like that with the earlier firmwares. I havent used my PSP in ages so it might have been changed in one of the updates
Not with my Japanese one it didn't. It's all over wi-fi anyway.

Wiki:

While firmware updates can be used with consoles from any region, Sony recommends only downloading firmware updates released for the region corresponding to the system's place of purchase
