PSP 2 to Feature Touch Controls?

Rumors from Gamescom this week say Sony's new handheld will utilize touch-sensitive controls.

According to reports, Sony is currently demoing the PSP 2 to select developers at Gamescom in Cologne Germany this week, and it allegedly sports some interesting new control mechanics.

Eurogamer has cited three unnamed developer sources, who say they have seen and used the device, which allegedly features an improved screen with touch-sensitive controls on the back panel of the unit. The prototype is being demoed with first-party software built specifically for the new platform, the site's sources say.

This week's reports fall in line with nearly two years worth of rumors, which have consistently suggested that Sony has been working diligently on a proper successor to their popular PSP handheld and focusing on touch-enabled controls. What makes the most recent batch of chatter interesting, however, is that up until recently the PSP 2's touch-enabled controls have been thought to be limited to the screen, not the actual framework of the device.

Naturally none of the rumored features of the PSP 2 should be taken as fact until Sony gets official, which according to Eurogamer's sources may be quite some time. While one developer said that they expect to see the PSP 2 hit retail by the end of 2011, another believes it will be several years before the platform is publicly introduced.

I wonder if Sony will hold it back to try and add some sort of 3D funtionality to it similar to the 3DS?

Not sure if they'll go with 3D, I'd be happy with something that has half decent graphics and sound, and something that actually has the ability to properly render smoke, because in every game I've played the smoke effects look absolutely awful and the sound appears to be quite tinny or distorted in the majority of games.

Sony copy Nintendo, never :p

I think they will introduce the psp2 when they figure out what they want it to be, there was that a bit a while ago about the next psp being a phone, i don’t think sony really knows what they want to do with it.

i think if sony implimented a good system of playing a large % of the PS2 systems libary then they would be on for a winner, especially if they had some way that connecting the psp2 to the ps3 enabled all ps3s to play ps2 games direct from disk/hdd via PSN.

a touchscreen handheld system with the power (or a bit more power) of a ps2 (upscaled and with AA & AF) would be a great device.

not only does it launch with the amasing library of ps2 games a touchscreen would also allow for development of great games that were not available on the ps2.

cmon sony you know this device would sell - make it for me!

no doubt those 'touch sensitive buttons' will be in places guaranteed to give you carpel tunnel if you use the damn thing for more than 10 minutes. i dont think 'ergonomics' is in the sony dictionary.

If it's going to be anything like the current PSP I'll give it a miss, think I found 2-3 games I liked on the system, and those have only been released this year.

Interesting, agree with the ps2 games compatibility.

I'd be more interested in Sony designed a handheld thats easy to use tbh.

I've not really used my psp much since i got it if I'm honest, i just find it incredibly awkward to use for any game that requires more than a simple d pad. Kind of spoils the enjoyment for me. Worst design for an analogue stick ever. That being said, will be picking up Valkyria Chronicles 2. I'd be interested in a psp2 if they fixed those issues. If not, i'd probably pass unless i had money to burn.

Really?

I wish I had more time to play the old classics + the new games that are being released like Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker, God of War, Fifa 2010, Final Fantasy Crisis Core.

Honestly, I don't know why people say the PSP doesn't have enough games. How many games do you need? The DS has a lot of games but 99% of them are kids crap.

Guess what, nobody plays DS either. And that has an infinitely larger catalogue than PSP.

You when you start bashing other systems rather than trying to build up the system your trying to defend, its looks childish and fanboyish.
