PSP Datel Battery/Pandora battery question(s)

Hi,

I trust I'll literally be able to buy the Datel battery, create my magic memory stick using PSP Grader and install 4.01 M33-2 with no troubles? (I'll be following this: http://www.orderoftheflame.co.uk/blog/?page_id=788). I don't need to check I have any specific type of motherboard/version of PSP do I?

My main question though is: would I be better off getting the Datel, or a Pandora battery?

I plan to keep it for future use in case I ever install some dodgy home brew that ends up bricking my PSP.

Oh, and is the method shown in the link above better than the Pandora's GUI method?

[Edit]
Can I install 4.01 M33-2 straight away, or do I need to do 4.01 M33 and then 4.01 M33-2?

[Edit]
Can the Datel battery be used as a normal battery for the PSP? I found one for £12.99 from a famous website, I think it's a small price to pay to breath new life into my PSP :)

I know they can be got cheaper from America, but I don't want to risk paying customs, having delayed delivery etc.

Thanks,
Craig.

Those batteries are exactly the same and will do the same thing.

Although I would remove the link just incase (I know it was originally posted here, but I'm not sure whether he removed it of his own will or if a mod asked him to).

Its a really simple process and the only way you could mess up would be if your battery fell out or ran out of power during the flashing of the firmware. Just follow that guide and you will be done in no time :) The only difficult part would be finding the most simple and upto date software, but he has more or less done it all for you in that guide.

I found the link above in the other PSP thread :), so I think it's alright... sorry if it's not mods.

I've got a few bookmarks of PSP resources, so I'll check around and see if there's any more up to date PSP Grader software.

Let's say I wanted to go back to the original Sony firmware, I know it's stupid and I never would go back... but let's just say I wanted to sell it for example... would I be able to easily reinstall the original firmware? Or, let's say they release 4.05M33 and it had a few bugs that annoyed me... could I easily go back down to 4.01M33?

Also, are the official demos compatible with a 4.01 M33-2 PSP? I quite like downloading the latest ones and giving them a play to see if there's anything good.

I couldn't "change" my firmware on my PSP running Vista on my laptop.
Ended up using a friends lappy that still had XP on it.
Works a treat now:cool:

With the official F/W, I think you would just download and install an offiical one.

You shouldn't have to, I think there's only minor issues with some Asian slim models, afaik. :)
My main question though is: would I be better off getting the Datel, or a Pandora battery?
I'd say you are. It's far easier to have buy a dedicated battery, than to modify one.

Personal preference I guess. I didn't want to muller a perfectly good battery with my soldering. :o

I prefer it by far. It's much simpler. :)

If you're installing using a pandora battery and the method above. It'll take you straight to 4.01 M33-2

Mine seems to work ok with my pandora battery. I just use my normal battery and only use the pandora one when I need it though.

I can't see why it would be an issue as long as you weren't using a magic memory stick.

Have a read of comments 6,8 and 10 on the guide. They cover going back to the OFW. As said you can just run the latest sony updater (as long as your not already on that version with CFW).

Downgrading firmware means you'll need re-use the pandora battery and find a reliable installer that goes back to the firmware you want. :( Possible, but can be a pain depending on how far you want to go back. Going back to 4.01 M33-2 would be a simple as running the guide again.
Thanks,
Craig.

No problem. Feel free to just ask if you have any more questions. :)

I never actually posted it on OcUK, just links to it. I sent an email asking to a Don for permission, but never heard a reply. I decided to post it on my on blog, and link to it from here. :)

I've got an XP machine running here fortunately, so even if there are OS compatibility issues with the programs that need to be used I'll be alright :)

Thanks very much orderoftheflame for all those answers, I think I'll be ordering my battery today :D. Can't wait to get my PSP cracked.

Another quick question: can I run pretty much any homebrew/software from PSP-Hacks.com, or do I need to check compatibility with 4.01M33-2?

Thanks,
Craig.

You might have to check for compatibility in some cases especially older homebrew, but if it's been written for a recent firmware it'll usually be ok. :)

Sweet, thanks very much :D

[Edit]
Just a quick question: why in Pandora's GUI do you need to provide the 1.5 OFW? I'm not planning on using Pandora's GUI, just wondering :)

Some very old homebrew will only run on the 1.50 OFW, which you can run as a plugin on some CFW. This definately wont work with a slim PSP.

Any decent homebrew will most likely have been rewritten to work with newer CFW, so I wouldn't bother with 1.50 unless you have a phat PSP and want to run some really old homebrew apps.

Ah, I see. So basically for someone like me who's completley new to homebrew/CFW there's no point at all.

Thanks for all the help everyone, hopefully my Pandora's battery will be here on Tuesday.

Why do I always end up ordering stuff on the weekend! Then I have to wait ages for it! :(
