what is the difference between the old and the slim one apart from size? Any battery life gains?

Do the batteries get worse with age? What is expected play time when playing from a stick?

One it's custom firmwared up, what can it do apart from play roms? what is the mame emulator like? I also read that there was some sort of ps1 emulator, is it any good?

Not 100% sure on the differences..

I imagine the battery will get worse but I imagine that would take quite a while, and replacments are dirt cheap anyway...

Mame is perfect, as is the snes one, megadrive etc... you can play PS1 iso's from it as well.

The battery life is much better running from the mem card, I used mine to listen to music and play games on the plane to and from NY a few weeks ago, a total of about 6/7 hours of music/games, had quite a bit of life left when I landed.

The slim has 64MB of RAM where as the original has 32MB, although that doesn't make a big difference as games can only be made to use 32MB so they work on all PSPs. The extra 32MB is used as a cache to reduce load times.

There is actually an official PS1 emulator because you can buy PS1 games on a PS3 and transfer them to PSP. I'm not sure whether using custom firmware allows you to use that for any PS1 game you want, or whether it's a different emulator made by someone else. Either way, I expect it works quite well.

CFW uses the Sony emulator but cracked so it can play any PS1 game, even multi-disc ones. :)

The battery life on either PSP models can be increased by using games from the memory stick rather than the UMD drive, it's quite an increase I think.

yeah I saw that but I don't want a new one, just something on the cheap to mess about with.

am i right in that it's basically a better screen? I'm not interested in tv out etc. I imagine th enew one will mean reduced prices and lots of second hand slims and originals though.

Yeah it's basically a better screen, though the current screens are excellent already so I wouldn't hesitate buying one.

The new one deals with light on the screen better though, so less glare when outside and under direct light.

What's with the name change Jihad?

- Faster CPU (for some games I think)
That's not exclusive to the slim. Originally the CPU was clocked at 222MHz, but it was actually rated at 333MHz. In one of the firmware updates, Sony unlocked the ability for developers to switch the clock speed to 333MHz. The slim and the original both play exactly the same games. Only difference to the actual game it makes is the loading times.
