Just wondering about some general info really, going to be travelling on the train and away from home a fair bit soon and the ds has never really appealed to me.

I have a lot of Divx movies can I convert these to a format that will work on the psp?

Does it matter what version of the psp I get? And how much should I pay (second hand)?

How do you play ps1 games on it?

What games are worth getting?

I think the PSP supports MP4 and AVI. It doesn't matter that much which version you buy, even though I have one myself I wouldn't recommend the PSP Go as it's a download only machine and the prices on the Playstation Store can sometimes be a bit pricey, so that leaves you with one of the candybar style PSP's. There's the 1000 which was the first model and doesn't have a microphone, it also has the worst screen, the 2000 is when they made it a bit slimmer and added a built in microphone as well as improving the screen and then I think the 3000 offered more improvements to the screen and more lightening/slimming.

The 3000 is the one you'll typically see in the shops and I think it can be had for around £100 new. It depends how much money you want to spend on it, you can pick up second hand PSP's fairly cheaply and there's often ones up for sale in the MM. To play PS1 games you download them from the Playstation Store, you can do that directly from your PSP, or you can use a program on your PC to do it. The best games I'd say would be the games in the Metal Gear Solid, Tekken and GTA series' and Gran Turismo, but there's loads of RPG's and stuff like that, just look on your website of choice for reviews.

Some of the typically high scorers are:

Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker
Patapon
Burnout Legends
Lumines
Final Fantasy Crisis Core
Wipeout Pure
SOCOM Fireteam Bravo
Tactics Ogre
Daxter

I would say keep your eyes peeled at the end of the year for the NGP. until then you should be able to get a cheap 3000 on ebay to tide you over.

I got a 3000 model a couple of years back and don't regret buying it although it doesn't get used much unless I need to travel to work on public transport or am going on holiday.

A few things I've noticed are:
- Decent catalogue of games. I'm currently playing Final Fantasy Tactics.
- PS1 games available on PSN or if you own some yourself you can get them on there but we're not allowed to talk about how you do it.
- Great for emulating other consoles e.g. Snes/Megadrive. I'm playing Super Mario World on mine but again we can't talk about how to do it.
- Does a decent job of playing videos.
- Even with the improved screen on the 3000 models the thing is almost unusable outdoors as you can't see a thing on it if it's remotely sunny.
- I find it uncomfortable to use for long periods as my hands get sore holding it. I'd say I have average sized hands.
- Decent battery life.

The PSP is great if you are willing to void your warranty and install CFW, then you can emulate pretty much any older system, I have converted a few of my old PS1 disks to a psp playable format and play emulated Snes/Mega drive/GBA games on it,

I only actually have 2 PSP UMD games as most of them are terrible, On metacritic's all time top PSP games, only 3 have a score of 90 or over and they are only 90,90 and 91

Plus playing anything from UMD will drain your battery pretty quickly

The psp is a great little gaming platform, i have the psp go as i prefer digital to lots of discs lying around, its pretty much the best version of the psp to date IMO.
The new psp is coming out soon'ish aswell but i really wouldnt be surprised if that cost 400+ with the amount of new tech thats going into it.

Used to love mine, dropped it in the sink and never replaced it :(

Anyone know whether the new one will be backwards compatible?
