Hey,

So due to a local sale, I'm getting the chance of picking up a brand New PSP bundle with Metal Gear Solid +2gb memory card, PSP is green for about 70 pounds.

Is a PSP worth the money? I mean ,it's a really big sale but still, is it a fun device to have?

I don't own any handheld device at the moment so I guess that's what I'm thinking of , should i get a psp or something else

Thanks :D

I recently sold my PSP1000 to get a 3000 instead. It's a nice little handheld but only really gets used on trips. Being able to play PS1 games downloaded from PSN is a nice touch, at the moment I have a memory card loaded with FF7, 8, and 9! :D

As for the games, there are plenty of good ones out there, but I don't find it gets any play time when i'm near my PC or PS3.

Obviously mileage will vary, but you need to consider how much you'd play it.

Not fussed on that camouflage casing, I would find it distracting. As Tute says, if you're indoors with other games consoles or a gaming PC then you'll probably find you won't use it, I know I never use my PSPGo but then I don't really like the form factor, if I had a 3000 I may use it more but that's still a bit of a doubt when I've got a more than capable PC and a PS3 sat just across the room.

Was it worth the jump? I'm using my PSP 1000 a lot more now and I was thinking of upgrading to a 3000 for the better screen. Any regrets?

To OP, buy it and then get MGS Peace Walker - AMAZING!

There all right, got one for my birthday to play a bit of gran torismo, cant say iv played it all that much other than liberty city stories though...

Am going to give downloading some ps1 games to it at some point though

It comes with it, it's a bundle, MS Sony Pro Duo 2gb + Peace Walker + PSP :d

I think I'm gonna get, I have a PS3 back home but not with me at the moment. and this is all I got, hey, if I don't touch it again, atleast it will be worth having for the 11 hour flight,

+ I LOVE metal gear solid and final fantasy and my gf already has crysis core.

Hey,

I was just about to post something similar to this - a high street store has the old PSP-2000 models clearing out for ~£80 - and I conveniently have £80 worth of Nectar points burning a whole in my wallet :D I wanted to have a tinker with one, as it's the only current generation system I don't own :p

I already have a 360, PS3 and PC at home which means I would never use it at home, and on the rare occasion that I'm not driving when travelling, I have my DS which does not get the usage it deserves. I do want to play certain PSP exclusives though (RR, VC2, CoO etc), and also try out remote play features with the PS3.

HOWEVER - it seems PSP2 might be out as soon as the holiday season?! So do you guys reckon it would be worth holding out for that.

Cheers,

Su

PSP2 ?

You can download a lot of PS One games from the Sony store like Final Fantasy 7, 8, 9 Crash Bandicoot and other classics but not all of them.

I thought it was just a rumour.

Do people know when it's going to be released anyway?

Now that's something else for me to think about until tomorrow.

Hehe :)

Well there have been lots of rumblings and pseudo-leaks... and PSP is almost 6 years old, so it's logical to assume there will be a successor in the very near future!

PSP2 is inevitable in my opinion, the 3DS already being announced and I'm sure that Sony will want to compete, especially with the success of the PSP, what is it 60 million units since launch? That's a hella lot.

What I would love is a PSP2 phone - that would finally end my constant deliberation over what smartphone to get :p

Ahh now that's something I have no interest in. It would definitely solve the issue of which phone to get, but at the same time I feel like there's no practical way the two can be merged. Unless it was in a similar form to the PSPGo, with the sliding mechanism, which I find very uncomfortable to use for any extended period of time. I'd have concerns about the battery life too, what if I'm playing a game and the battery dies, it means I can't take calls either, it'd need some serious battery life and I think to achieve that they would need to cut down considerably on the hardware inside, which would detract from the whole experience in my opinion. The PSP in it's current incarnation isn't graphically pleasing and if they had to dumb down the hardware even further I don't see the point in it at all, even if it had the functions of a phone combined.

What will interest me is what storage medium is used. If Sony goes with a digital, download only device then I think it will fail, hard. I think they were on the right lines with the UMD, they just needed a drive that was able to read them faster, I'm not sure if this is an issue on the 2000 and 3000 models, but on my original 1000 the UMD drive couldn't read some of my games quick enough and would result in a lot of pop in and pauses while the game loads, particularly evident in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories. I think if they went with some kind of higher capacity UMD type disk with the option to fully or partially install games to flash memory for faster access times is the way to go. I want it to be a competitive device and I think if they go the way of the PSPGo with downloads only, games only available from the PSN with the price premium that it carries then it's going to be an absolute catastrophe.

I hope the audio will be much improved on the next device because on my PSP games the voice acting is decidedly tinny, again Vice City Stories springs out to me, it sounds as if every character has a sore throat, funnily though the sound track and other sound effects doesn't seem to be effected, only character voices. The graphics need to be improved to above Playstation 2 quality, at the moment I would consider the PSP to be better graphically than the Playstation, but not as good as Playstation 2. Say this device comes out in 2011 which isn't impossible, then it needs to be at least competing on the audio visual front with the PS2, if not better. I'm not convinced that it really *needs* a touch screen unless it's going the way of having an integrated mobile phone, but I find that hard to imagine. I just think that they will keep the Sony Ericsson and the Playstation brands completely separate with their own identities and merging a phone and a PSP would jeopardize that brand identity.

Well worth it. Screen is fantastic, better battery and it's lighter. I did get it pre-owned but it was as new, boxed in mint condition with a nice large memory card.

Can you download any old PS1 games or is there a list or something? Digimon World for example...

Any of the PS1 classics on the PSN store will work.

There are a fair few half decent gaming phones out there - iPhone4, HTC Desire to name but two?

You say that, but the fastest growing gaming platform at the moment is.... the smartphone (specifically the iTurd). Sony could leverage the power of the PS brand and the existing user base into a real Apple challenger (and hopefully beater). MS won't bring out a true handheld device at all, as they have their sights set on something similar - Windows Phone 7 with XBL integration and games. This amalgamation of devices is the way in which the industry is heading - who wants to carry round a phone, gaming device, netbook, GPS, camera etc etc? If Sony are smart they will not just follow, but lead the way in this drive towards a unified portable device.

Re. the load times on your PSP 1000 - I remember reading somewhere that the 1000 model only has 32MB of RAM which was responsible for the stuttering. 2000 and later models were upgraded to 64MB which got rid of this problem :)

Haha, they are smartphones which can play games, but they're nowhere near "hardcore" enough to be a true gaming phone (e.g. N-gage). IMO :)
