PSP worth it?

Re. the load times on your PSP 1000 - I remember reading somewhere that the 1000 model only has 32MB of RAM which was responsible for the stuttering. 2000 and later models were upgraded to 64MB which got rid of this problem :)

Su

Yes, you're right about the RAM, the 2000 and 3000 models had more RAM, it's even more noticeable on my Go as the games are of course saved to the console, most games load now within a few seconds, it's great compared to the 1000 I used to use.

As for gaming phones I have to say that I own an iPhone 3G and apart from Football Manager I haven't really got on with any games on it, Chinatown Wars for example, I have it on PSP and I have it on my iPhone and I find the PSP version to be much better. Not only is it smoother and better graphically, the iPhone has no buttons and no tactile feedback, it just feels weird playing something where you can't even feel the buttons, holding it in the traditional candybar way while having an overlay of "buttons" is just clumsy in my opinion and I find that barring one or two exclusions that include Indie games, mobile phone games are generally an overpriced waste of time.

Haha, they are smartphones which can play games, but they're nowhere near "hardcore" enough to be a true gaming phone (e.g. N-gage). IMO :)

Su

Yeah, it was a pretty loose usage of the term "half-decent".

iPhone saves me from being bored when the missus is rooting around at clothes shops though! :D

Still play my original PSP when travelling (long plane or train journeys). Mainly just have a blast on Virtua Tennis or GTA Vice City :p

That was probably the primary market for them in my opinion. In big cities where it makes more sense to use public transport than to drive yourself, otherwise I don't see much use for the PSP, especially when most people have at least one of the current generation of consoles or a gaming PC.

Haha ok, exciting as this diversion has been, should the OP and I buy a PSP or not?!

Please instruct :p

Su

Yes. :p

Get a 3000 and get the following:

Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker
Gran Turismo (PSP)
Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories
Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars
Tekken 6

and whatever PS1 classics you want. It might be worth making multiple PSN accounts for the various stores as they all have different PS1 Classics on them, we seem to have gotten the raw deal because the Japanese and US stores have better games in comparison to the majority of the Disney crap that we have.

Will the £80 PSP 2000 do? I don't want to spend more than the £80 worth of Nectar points I have :p

I have FF7 and G-Police (both were complete impulse PSN buys) and I have barely touched either, so hopefully having a PSP will be a good excuse to play them!!

Cheers,

Su

Yeah I think I'm getting,

PSP 3000
2GB Sony Ms Pro Duo
Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker
Final Fantasy Crysis Core
Final Fantasy 7
Crash Bandicoot Kart Racing haha

I don't know if I want to mod it thou, maybe down the line eventually, are there any downsides/cons to getting the psp modded?

Why? I don't believe installing custom firmware is illegal. But I could be wrong...

You just can't unfortunately. It normally ends in linking to sites etc, which come very close to being illegal.

I would say its worth it, if you travel a lot.

The 2000 will be fine. :)

Some reviewers / sites have claimed the 2000's screen is actually better at gaming than the 3000, the 3000 is clearly better in regards to photo viewing though. Plus, I heard some things about scan lines on the 3000.

You guys have reminded me ... Think i'm going to pick up Medal of Honor 1 or 2 for my trip to the US next month :D

PSP is quite cool but you get to play many of the same games from the bigger consoles but with worse gfx and worse controls. However the screen is massive and some games are really good. Even watching films on it is quite good (I mostly only watched south park on it and it was awesome).

I recommend getting the old UMD PSP type console, not the PSP GO as you can get cheap new or second hand games, really cheap and you can always sell them once not needed anymore.

Sweet, just got back from town with my PSP - it's a silver 2000 model with nothing in the box except for a charger & manuals - good old Sony :p

Now to start tinkering :D

Can PSP play DivX films from memory stick btw? (Like the PS3 can from HDD).

Cheers,

Su

I got it.

It wasn't the camouflage model it's just dark green, looks really nice :D

I'm really happy with it, not just got to figure out how to watch youtube videos on it
