My 60Gb does that for a few seconds everytime i turn it on. Probably why it's so slient during use!

I've never known the PS3 to Max it's fans like that during actual use.

I dont think the PS3 every would get that loud. Its just a test and cleans out the fans.

doubt it will clean anything
anyone with a pc will know that dust once inside the machine is not going to just go away by speeding up the fans
it will be sucking more dust in more likely

Was gonna say, it would need some serious power to blow out dust that has embedded itself into the little parts of the system. It might be designed to blow out clogs of dust that mounts up? Seems like an odd feature to include anyway, I mean who would do that regularly?

I think it will shift more than the average PC fan if you turn it up. My reason for this belief is it really isn't possible to turn a PC fan up much higher than its average RPM whereas the PS3 generally has a surprisingly low RPM by default, this fan test is a HUGE increase in RFM. It won't shift it all, but it will probably shift any loose dust that the usually slow fan won't shift if you get what i'm trying to say

It's to basically make the fan sound quieter on normal use. My mate tried it and the Triple blew loads of dust out the back.

Not always, Theres loads of different combinations out there, Some quiet, some loud. Some because of the fans, Some because of the DVD drives.

Yours may be loud when the dvd drive is going, My brothers is loud from the get go.

Mine is loud when a disk is in, and get's louder as it stays on.
