PSU 12V CPU cable Mod

I want a motherboard with an 8 pin 12v CPU cable socket if i buy an 8 to 8 pin extension cable and adapt it for a 4 pin cable will it work? Is the any reasoning behind 8 pin voltage wise?

Your 4 pin cable will fit in one side of the 8 pin socket without the need for any adapters.

My last motherboard had a blanking plate in one side of the 8 pin socket that I had to remove before I could use an 8 pin cable.

So u don't need to use all the pins you can put half of them in there?

You only really need a 8 pin cable if you have a clocked quad core. The extra power will help with stability then.

I want to overclock an E7400 to about 4Ghz hopefully will this affect it.
